Soccer is played on a field using a soccer ball, and is called football in other countries besides the USA. Soccer goals are frames of metal that have soccer nets attached to them and are placed behind each of the two teams. To score a goal, a team must kick the soccer ball into the other team's net and the team that ends up with the most soccer goals at the game's end is the winner.

It may not sound very complicated to get the ball in the goal, but the teams cannot utilize their hands to do this. They are only allowed to use their heads, feet, and bodies to move the ball to the other team's soccer goal. They are also not allowed to use their hands to block the ball from going into their goals. But every team has its own goalkeeper that is in charge of defending the goal and is allowed to use any body part to block the soccer ball. If a team member touches the ball with their hands, they will get a penalty from the referee, known as a "hand ball", and the other team is given a penalty kick because of it. There are other things that will cause a player to get a penalty, like tripping, kicking, elbowing, or holding onto members of the opposite team.

Professional soccer teams have 11 players on them, but teams for kids can have as little as 6 members. The team member are usually given uniforms that are matching colors and can include shorts, shirts, socks, special soccer shoes called cleats, and shin guards. A goalkeeper might have something different in their uniform so that they stand out as being the goal keeper, such as have special gloves on. There is one referee and two linesmen that stand on the sideline to watch for any ball that is kicked out of bounds. When the ball goes out of bounds, the team that did not kick it out is allowed to toss it back onto the field towards the opposing team's soccer goal.

When the games starts, each team is on one half of the soccer field, and one of the teams does the kick off. After this, the ball does not stop going, unless the referee issues a penalty for one of the teams. In order to get the ball down to the goals, the team members will dribble and pass the ball until they score. It is very hard to maintain possession of the ball, so there is a lot of switching between teams when the game is being played.

Whoever has the greatest amount of soccer goals when the match is over is declared the winner, unless there is a tie. If there is a tie, there will either be extra time put in, or there will be penalty shots taken to break the tie. In order to score goals, one must have a lot of skill, and this is one of the reasons that soccer is among the most commonly watched and played sports in the world.
