Social anxiety disorder affects almost 20 million people in the united states. Social anxiety disorder is a phobia of certain social situations. Many people with social anxiety disorder believe it to be depression or some sort of other mental illness. There are many different ways that social anxiety disorder can be treated like medicaion or therapy. Doctors will often treat patients with social anxiety disorder with antidepressants or cognitive-behavior therapy, depending on the particular case. The best known treatment for social anxiety disorder is the cognitive-behavior therapy. This is where the patient will go in to see a therapist that will help them look at situations differently and overcome their fears of social situations. Medications have been known to help with social anxiety disorder as well like xanex, valium and paxil.
If you feel like you are depressed or feel like you have high anxiety in social situations then you should go see your doctor and get checked out. Many people lose precious years of their life sitting at home because of social anxiety disorder and most of the time it is treatable. This is a very serious disorder that can negatively affect someone's personal life, work and even relationships with family members. This is a great overview of social anxiety disorder -- for those affected, its important to seek out a trusted person to talk to, whether it be a therapist, support group or family member.
You're absolutely right about changing perspective - instead of worrying what negative thoughts someone might have if you say "hello," or pay them a compliment, focus on the opposite. You might be making their day! They may be feeling just as isolated, and who knows, a kind word may change their life.
As you mentioned, this is a disorder that affects millions of people, and millions more have felt social anxiety at some point - for those suffering, you're certainly not alone!
