Social Bookmarking Sites

Social Bookmarking Sites are mass collaboration sites where members can save and share their bookmarks (favorite web pages) either privately or collectively. There are a large number of these sites available to choose from and they have functions which are similar to each other as well as unique features.

One of the more famous social bookmarking sites is called Digg. It is an extremely popular website that has been used and abused by its members for several years. It is such a popular site that the phrase "Digg-clones" was coined to refer to other bookmarking sites.

A newer site which incorporates revenue sharing is She Told Me. It has some of the features of Digg but not much of its popularity. This site rewards its users by allowing them to put their Google Adsense Id into their account which grants them revenue from visitors to their page.

Most bookmarking sites have certain features such as voting, friends, and comments. If you find a bookmark that you like you can vote it up or down and the ranking of the bookmark can be seen by other users of the site. If a page gets a high rating on a popular site it can garner a lot of traffic.

Some of these sites seem to encourage friends voting for other friends regardless of the quality of the page being saved. This can lead to abuses of the system and lessen the usability of the voting mechanism. People who socialize and become the leaders of the groups tend to do better than less social members.

Apart from the social aspects of these sites they have SEO advantages as well. One of the important things a webmaster must do to rank a website high with search engines is to get incoming links to their sites. Using auto bookmarking software can enable a webmaster to get a huge number of bookmarks to their site in a short amount of time. This impacts how important they are viewed by the search engines.

This SEO advantage has led to many such sites changing their links to nofollow. Nofollow links are not supposed to pass any SEO value (Google only) from one site to another. Whether or not this actually works is a hotly debated topic amongst the SEO community.

A good social bookmarking site does provide value in many ways to its users and should be an important part of any webmasters tool kit.

Wow mary I never noticed any of these articles of yours until now! That's an awesome idea! Keep it up these are going to be very helpful for a lot of people...plus some of these ads look quite enticing...
