Social Media Enabled Cameras: Polaroid SC1630

By Edited Apr 4, 2016 2 2

Cameras with social media integration are becoming increasingly popular. Such devices allow users to take photos and instantly upload them to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Social media cameras fill the niche desire for the high-quality photos of a camera and the immediacy and connectivity of mobile phones. This niche technology is being rapidly adopted by the social media hungry teenagers and tech-savvy travelers.

Polaroid SC1630

The Polaroid SC1630 is a very innovative addition to the range of social media enabled cameras and could easily become one of the most popular cameras in the category.

The SC1630 smart camera has the ability to take high definition 16 mega-pixel photos at 3 times optical zoom and has all of the traditional features of a camera.

What sets the SC1630 apart from traditional cameras is the way it uses  the Android operating system to allows users to connect to the internet via any Wi-Fi service. This allows users to upload pictures directly from the camera onto sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Being Android enabled means that this camera will also be able to download applications like additional camera software, games like the popular Angry Birds or even messaging apps like Skype. This sort of integration further blurs the already hazy lines between phones and cameras.

The SC1630's slim design and 3.2 inch touchscreen makes it extremely easy to share high quality photos as soon as you take them. It also has quite a tidy-looking retro style design.

The price and release date for the Polaroid SC1630 should be announced later at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. If it is given a resonable price it could be a very good camera to take to social events and holidaying where that social media integration will come in handy.

The listed features of the SC1630 include:

  • 16 Mega Pixel photos.
  • 3x optical zoom.
  • Android Operating System.
  • Touch screen display.
  • 3.2 inch display.
  • Internet access through Wi-Fi.
  • Social Media integration - Twitter and Skype.
  • Automatic face and smile detection.
  • Geo tagging.
  • Red-eye removal.
  • Photo resizing.
  • Clolour correction.
  • 18 Scene modes.
  • Up to 32 GB of SD memory.
  • 'Smart albums'.
  • Slim design.
  • A 'Retro' look.

According to Scott Hardy, president of Polaroid:

"The newest member of the Polaroid family, the Polaroid SC1630 Smart Camera unites the beauty of high-end digital images with powerful Android connectivity features. The result is an instant experience of click, capture and share that enables social networks to see and experience the moment as if they were there."

Polaroid has been around for over 75 years and in that time it has had a huge impact on the world of photography. Polaroid became renowned for it's instant Polaroid pictures and the SC1630 looks to be the natural extension of the instant gratification that has made them so successful in the past.

The Polaroid SC1630 is definitely a camera that you should be keeping an eye on. I'll be sure to post an update when more information on the release date and price are released!

Yeah the social media cameras are a unique niche product. Some even have 3G! They are suited to pretty specific situations like parties and holidays where you want to take high quality photos and upload them without having a computer. They wouldn't be so useful in everyday situations where you would just use a phone camera instead.

I could see these sorts of social media enabled cameras being really popular with travel bloggers too!

Im pretty interested in how this product niche ends up developing.
