Software Used in Jewelry Design

By | Mar 31, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

The techniquesin jewelry creation were introduced in 1800s and are still being used today. Up until recently, these methods flourished. Recently there were two technology advancement introduced that changed the spectrum completely: the computer aided manufacturing (CAM) and the computer aided design (CAD). The jewelry design we know today was refashioned by these two technologies. The designs which weren't even imaginable were now able to be created with high quality in jewelry designing software.

Learning how custom designed jewelry is made is the first thing that needs to be done before you can fully understand the new technologies. Most jewelries are made via the lost wax casting. The jeweler must first create the design with wax with small tools like knives and scalpels. The model is put in a flask and a type of plaster known as investment is poured around this model. Once you stiffened the impression and the model it will be created in the flask. After the cavity has been burned out the jewelry design will be left.

The next step in this complex process is metal being injected in the mold using either a vacuum or casting. The jewelry casting is exposed once the metal is cooled and hardened. Casting will be prepared and welding might also be used in order to finish the product.

The best method in creating custom pieces is the hand carving. There might be problems with inaccuracy if the result of manual process is inconsistent with the details in the computer. The key to quality is giving full attention to details. A product is better and more highly rated with a crisp appearance.

So what is computer aided design? It is a sophisticated method or process which takes advanced software and places exact coordinates for the drawings. They can be sent to other machines known as growing machines. They will use a block of wake to make the model by cutting away materials. Materials are laid from side to side to create it. Observing how it's done you can very well see the accuracy of the software as opposed to the prior methods used.

3-D CAD allows its users to preview their design. Prior to its introduction, jewelers before had to bank on hand drawings which they could show to potential buyers. Now, it can be put on a screen to look realistic before becoming real.

You have to know your stuff first before you go to a jeweler for a customized jewelry design. Expect that there will be good and bad designers in all works. Take a look at his pieces so you could assess if he/she could really meet your standards. One jewelry is created it cannot be modified without cost so be certain to have a good relationship with the potential jeweler.

In creating designs and jewelry, those jewelers with the best skills will use 3d-CAD. It is better to go with the jeweler who uses advanced designing software if ever you find two simiral jewelers. With 3D-CAD you're putting a lot of quality to your design even if it may cost more.
