Vermicomposting is also known as worm composting. More and more people are switching to vermicomposting due the numerous benefits they have. The most important reason for which they are preferred is that they are eco-friendly.  Vermicomposting is an easy process where worms are used. The process of composting can be carried out at home and the effort that is required is minimal.

Vermicomposting- What is it?

The process of vermicomposting includes storing of worms in a bin and they are fed with kitchen waste. The result that you get is a mixture of worm casings, decaying organic materials along with bedding materials. The end product you get is very beneficial as manure. They are very easy to make and at the same time they are very low on maintenance.

You always have the option of creating a worm farm of your own. The procedure is very simple and can be done by anybody. The whole process will become much more cost effective if you create your own worm farm.

The containers in which you want to do vermicomposting do not release a bad odor. They can be used for all purpose for example you can use them at your office, school, home or any place where you can think of growing plants or a kitchen garden. They are environment friendly and do not release any harmful gases in the air. Vermin compost is also affordable and you can also start a small scale business at your home. Vermicomposting can be done by people belonging to all age groups. Vermin compost comes in the form of liquid. The liquid that is derived after the composting takes place is then mixed with water in the ratio of 1:10.


Useful Tips for Doing Vermicomposting

  • Worms prefer feeding on plant based products like fruit and vegetable left out, tea leaves, egg shells and grounded coffee.
  • Make sure that you do not use fruits that have high level of acid like citrus fruits, orange and lemon. You must also avoid steer clear fruits or vegetables like onion.
  • Do not use milk products or meat products in your Vermicompost farm.
  • The food matter that you give must be mashed as worms do not have teeth.
  • You must always keep the farm moist. In hotter regions you might need sprinkle a little water. At the same time you will need to make a point that the farm does not become soggy.
  • Use old clothes or rugs to protect your farm from other insects and flies.
  • Cold climate is the best for vermin composting. The only thing that you need to keep in mind id feed the worms regularly.
  • If the worm farm is kept outside make it a point to keep them upon water so that insects and bugs are not able to enter the farm.
  • Make sure that the worm farm is partially closed or you can even use a mesh. To cover them so that the worms do not feel the heat and at the same time is protected from insects.

The worms that are used for composting are red wrigglers you can buy them from a local store or you can also buy them from online store.
