I ordered the Sony BDP-S500 Blu-ray Disc Player online from Dell and it arrived within 2 days. I connected it via HDMI port to my Sony Audio Video receiver within 5 minutes after opening the box. My receiver connects via HDMI to my new Sony Bravia 28 inche LCD TV. I took out my latest movie "Transformers" which is the first Blu-ray disk that I bought and started to play it in my new player. In the first few minutes, the picture appeared black and there was a No Signal display in my TV. After that the picture reappeared and I could not figure out the reason for this.
During the second half of the movie, the sound went quite bad and I could not understand the movie. I reloaded the disc again and found that everything was fine. So, I guess that I must not have loaded the disc properly. These units appear to be like refurbished units and are not totally brand new ones. And one more drawback is that there is no HDMI cable given along with the player and this has to be bought separately. The problem which I mentioned earlier might have happened because the player was cold when I took it out of the box.
I have enjoyed the picture quality with this Sony BDP-S500 Blu-ray Disc Player for quite some time. The menus and navigation provided in the player are quite easy. I made some errors initially while adjusting with the buttons since there is a double ring layout in the remote but after using it for a while, I got adjusted to it. One of the irritating problems with the player is that it will not restart the disk when it is stopped. It will proceed from the point of playback where it was stopped. When inquired with support people from Sony, they say that it can be caused due to java based media but they could not help resolving this bug.
The front panel of the player looks great. I love the seamlessness of the player which hides most of the buttons behind a moving front panel. The firmware upgrade procedure is quite easy for the player once we have the disc with us. The load time of the player is quite high which is quite irritating when we sit to watch an interesting move. The disc takes quite a long time to load initially but after that it is fine. I have watched lot of Blu-ray DVDs since then with this player and find it quite amusing. The player is good as long as you know how to handle it.
