Southern Style Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes
Fried green tomatoes are an awesome side dish. Having good instructions and a tried
and true recipe are a must. Grow the tomatoes in your own garden or you can buy them
at your local store. Pick just before they start to turn yellow. You don't want them to be too
green or they will be bitter. On the other hand not too ripe or they just won't work.
Let's give it a go and see if I can help you make the prefect southern style fried green tomato.
First off the ingredients;
3 to 4-large green tomatoes
2 -cups cornmeal
1 -teaspoon salt
1/2 -teaspoon black pepper
1/2-teaspoon paprika
1 -tablespoon flour
buttermilk
pinch of sugar
vegetable or olive oil![]()
Step 1...
Now you'll need to wash the green tomatoes, remove the stems and such,
and cut them into thick slices. I don't know about inches, I just cut them
about the thickness of my thumb. I'd say about 1/2-inch or so.
Step 2...
In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients.
In another large bowl pour the buttermilk, about a cup.
Step 3...
Pour some oil in a fry pan...about an inch deep. Heat it up to medium high heat,
don't let it smoke. Test it, drop a few drops of buttermilk in there, if it spits a little it's almost ready,
if it spits a lot, it's too hot. You'll need to find just in the middle.
Step 4...
Okay, now you're ready to dip the green tomato slices in the buttermilk
and then into the dry mixture. Coat them well. Carefully drop the slices of
green tomato in the hot oil, you noticed I said, "Hot", so be careful. It will spit hot oil,
and you could get burned bad!!!, best thing is to use a fry screen,
these can be bought at any store that sells cooking pot and pans. Got mine at Walmart.

Step 5...
Cook the green tomato slices on one side just until lightly browned,
then carefully turn and cook the other side.
This isn't going to take more than about a minute or two per side.
Remove from HOT..oil and drain on a paper towel.
Serve with sour cream, or if you're like me...ranch dressing..which is by the way,Yummy.

Warning...Please be careful cooking with hot oil.
I sure hope I've helped you create some awesome fried green tomatoes. Good luck.

Sounds great Lyn, we have some green tomatoes I want to try this with - thanks.
I've enjoyed eating fried green tomatoes at least once a garden season for many years now. I think the next time around, I will try frying them in olive oil -- at least that won't make me feel quite as guilty. Good article.
Thanks Lee.
