Spa Pumps
One of the big problems that spa owners usually face is when their hot tub pump fails. When this happens, owners usually seek ways on how to replace their pumps. Apparently the cost of repairing this is much larger than buying a new one.
Spa pumps that are considered reliable usually last for 6-8 years. So it is better to be prepared to replace older pumps that fail. One way in making sure that your hot tub pump will last for a long time is to check the device. Inspecting it every time you check the filter will be a big boost to further increase its life expectancy.
The important things that you should be checking for are water leakage, loud noises and pump motors that get too hot. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is best if you repair or replace the pump before it fails. This is vital because it can prevent further damage to other parts, especially to important parts like the heater. Anytime that you notice water leakage is present, it means there is a problem. You should look closely at the device and it is important to determine where the water is coming from.
Some common places where water starts to leak are from the ports. The only thing you should do in this case is just to tighten the ports or just replace the o-rings. It might also come from the motor shaft or pump housing; leaking bearings are the cause of this. This needs to be fixed immediately before the bearings and other parts completely fail. If not you might have a flood to deal with.
Also, it is better if you make an advanced inspection of the pump housing to see if there are small cracks that are visible. Even a little crack in the housing will get bigger with everyday use because of the vibration produced when using it. This should also be fixed immediately or a replace it with a new housing.
If metal pinging sounds can be heard that means there is a problem in the 1.5 hp pool pump. This can be a serious problem in the spa motor. Internal damage should be repaired immediately or replaced.
It is common for a hot tub motor to release some heat, but when you are not able to place your hand on the pump motor because it is very hot that means there is an internal motor problem. With very hot spa pumps, too much energy is used and that means a higher cost to you. Ensuring that the pump motor is using the right amount of energy is important because when the motor is cooler, a lesser amount of energy is used and it is more efficient.
Another common problem that owners experience is having a faulty starter. This is evident when your spa pumps hums, but does not come on. Your breaker may trip at this stage. But before planning to replace anything, it might just be a minor problem so check it first. There might be an obstruction. If anything is placed on the spring it might be causing the starting problem. If you live in a cold climate, check if there is ice in the spring, a normal hair dryer aimed at the ice to melt it can solve this problem.
Other factors to consider are the sizes of the spas themselves. Depending on whether it is a 2 person hot tub or a 4 person hot tub will determine what size of pump is needed for the best result. When you are looking for a new 1 hp pool pump it is best to consider their qualities and specifications. The power requirement is very important, port opening and HP ratings also need to be considered. It might be a good idea to look for more premium brands compared to those low cost pumps that can fail easily. Settle for the premium pumps that can last longer, are quieter and more efficient. You may even save money by getting a more expensive unit. They usually last longer and do not require as much maintenance either.
One of the things you can do is look for reviews of spa pumps on the web. You can also talk to spa manufacturer's reps to find out their opinion of the best spa pumps. Additionally, you can talk to a sales rep at a pool or hot tub supply store to see what they think will be the best course for you to take. The more knowledge you have about the products, the better chance you will have to make the right decision to benefit you to the greatest degree. Preparedness wards off emergencies so if you know how to handle a failed pump then chances are that it won't happen to you.
