While it's easy to buy a packet sauce or a ready made sauce in a jar, it works out more expensive in the long run than making your own spaghetti bolognese meat sauce. Learning how to make spaghetti bolognese yourself will not only save you money, but will give you the satisfaction of knowing you have made the dish from scratch. This spaghetti bolognese meat sauce recipe is simple to remember and will come in handy time and time again.

(Serves 4 approximately)

2 tbsp olive oil
2 medium sized onions (chopped)
2 cups of button mushrooms (sliced)
3 cloves of garlic (crushed)
1lb of lean minced beef
1 can of chopped tomatoes
3 tsp of mixed herbs
salt and pepper (to taste)
tomato sauce (to taste)

Prepare the onions, mushrooms and garlic ready for cooking. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over a medium heat. Add the onions and fry until soft. Next, add the mushrooms and fry for 2 or 3 minutes. Now, briefly fry the crushed garlic in the pan before adding the lean minced beef. Brown the meat in the pan, stirring frequently with a spatula. If the minced beef you have bought is lean enough, it will not release too much fat during cooking. If, however, it is a little fatty and the mixture looks too greasy, remove excess fat with a spoon or ladle.

Add the can of chopped tomatoes and the mixed herbs. Continue stirring for a while and mash the chopped tomatoes up with the spatula as you stir until they are of a sauce-like consistency. Turn the heat down to low and continue to simmer. Add salt and pepper and tomato sauce to taste. The tomato sauce will sweeten the sauce slightly. Taste the mixture using a clean teaspoon periodically to see if it needs more herbs, salt and pepper or tomato sauce.

You can also add some tomato puree and paprika to the bolognese sauce according to your personal taste. A dash of Worcestershire sauce can also add to the flavor. Using red onions instead of white ones makes for a nice variation, adding to the sweetness of the dish. Experiment with different ingredients and quantities until you have found your perfect bolognese recipe.

Serve the bolognese with spaghetti and garlic bread for a tasty, economical and quick to make meal. Add extra or fewer ingredients according to how many people you need to serve. This spaghetti bolognese meat sauce recipe will come in useful when you need to serve unexpected guests in a hurry, or simply need to feed the family without too much fuss.
