Computers are useful for accomplishing millions of things. Unfortunately they can also be rather annoying. If it seems like your new computers is suddenly running slower than when you first purchased it you are probably not imaging things. Luckily, there are some easy things that you can do to speed up your computer!

One of the first things that every computer owner should do is install anti-virus software and ensure it is regularly updated. This will help to protect your computer from dangerous viruses, Trojan horses, and worms that can slow down the speed of your computer. AVG provides users with a fee anti-virus program that scans your computer for threats. There are premium versions of AVG that are also available that offer additional features. The free version will provide you with the basic anti-virus that every computer should have!

If you like to surf the internet, make sure you pick a reliable software program that scans for malware that may inadvertently find its way onto your computer. In most cases, these programs protect against different threats than your anti-virus software will so it is important to use software to accomplish both tasks. Ad-Aware offers a free version of their software.

Between installing programs, deleting files, and the many other activities you may perform on your computer, you may end up with a hard drive that is heavily fragmented. When this occurs, it takes your hard drive longer to access the information you need, which means it slows down your computer's performance. In order to overcome this problem, make sure to defrag your hard drive on a regular basis.

Windows operating systems come with a built in defrag utility that will analyze the state of your hard drive and reorganize your files to improve performance. It is a good idea to check the status of your hard drive at least once a month. If your hard drive does need to be defragged, set the program to run at night so it will not interfere with your computer usage!

To recap, make sure you have anti-virus installed and keep the program updated. Make sure you also install an anti-malware program. Don't forget to regularly defrag your hard drive in order to maintain optimal performance.
