History
Spoonbread is a rich, but light cornmeal based bread from the 1800s Appalachian region. Traditionally served with a wooden spoon, it remains a staple at the historic Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant in downtown Berea. Already boasting some of the finest craftspeople in the world, Berea organized the Spoonbread Festival to not only celebrate this wonderful food, but to celebrate the potters, weavers, instrument makers, jewelry makers and other traditional craftsmen and artists that have made Berea famous the world over.

Berea was recently named one of the Top 25 Art Destinations by AmericanStyle magazine. The Spoonbread Festival continues to grow each year as more people discover the beauty of the town, people and arts & crafts made here. For many people, this is the first time sampling spoonbread and it offers a great chance to enjoy the good-natured competitions in the town during the festival over which time-honored recipe is best. The real winner is the person who gets to sample all the delicious breads!
