While contact lenses have been in vogue for quite some time now but with the advent of latest technologies sport contact lenses designed for athletes, swimmers and other professional sportsmen are becoming increasing more popular.

These lenses enhance sports performances by providing a larger field of view than eyeglasses or normal contact lenses and are designed strictly for sport and recreation purposes.

When it comes to sport contact lenses, a few well-known brands come to mind namely
Bausch and Lomb and Nike.

Pros and Cons

Contact lenses for sport have many advantages over normal contact lenses and eyeglasses,
  • They offer excellent peripheral vision.
  • They offer an unobstructed view of the field unlike eyeglasses which may restrict the field of vision.
  • These lenses also remain cleaner regardless of the environment and offer clearer vision.
  • They leave less room for injury since glasses can break but sport contact lenses won’t.
  • They offer more stable vision as they fit snugly onto the cornea and prevent displacement of the lenses.
  • They are more compatible with sports gear like helmets or goggles as they don’t interfere with the fit or comfort of these safety gears.
  • Sport contact lenses can withstand more impact and hence no special equipments are required for withstanding impact.
While sport contact lenses provide a wide array of comforts, there are several dangers and risks associated with using these lenses,
  • Bacteria and other microorganisms may accumulate on theses sports contact lenses. These could lead to serious eye infections.
  • Dry eyes may be a problem for cold weather sportsmen like skiers and for sportsmen who keep their eyes open most of the time like hockey goalies and racquetball players.
  • Some sportsmen like tennis players who play outdoors in the sun may need UV protection which sport contact lenses cannot provide.
  • Contact with tap water may change the curvature of the lenses and cause headaches and blurred vision and even serious eye problems.
Since the pros are more than the cons and the latter can be reduced by careful usage and care, it is safe to say that sport contact lenses are a very good option for most sportsmen who need corrective lenses.
