A Review of Steel City Pizza in Spring Texas
If you are a pizza fan and you live in the Spring Texas area, you owe it to yourself to try a place called Steel City Pizzeria. Located on Sawdust Road just a couple of miles west of Interstate 45, it is in the heart of Spring Texas and easy to get to. It is on the corner of a strip center.
Steel City Pizza got its name because the owners are from Pittsburgh and are huge Steelers fans. This is immediately evident upon entering the place; there is black and gold everywhere. Terrible Towels, newspaper articles, memorabilia, you name it, the Steelers are well represented in this cozy pizza joint. Other Pittsburgh teams get a little real estate on the walls as well, namely the Pirates and the Penguins.
Now, being that I am a native Texan I was a little confused when I first tried this place several years ago, because I was under the impression that Philadelphia was famous for their cheesesteak sandwiches. After that first visit however, I no longer cared what Pittsburgh is known for. All I knew is that Steel City Pizzeria was going to be my favorite pizza place ever, and it still is to this day.
They have several pies on the menu, but my favorite and the one I highly recommend is the Deluxe. It’s what you think a typical deluxe pizza would be; tomato sauce, pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, green peppers, onions, and banana peppers. But there is absolutely nothing typical about the taste. The tomato sauce (they call it a ‘hard working red sauce’) they use always tastes fresh and tangy, and the crust! It’s thinner than most crusts I’ve had in the past at chain pizza stores, but it is so chewy and tender. They don’t skimp on the toppings either, and even though the crust is thin it holds the whole load very well. When I’m feeling sassy and want to shake things up I like to get the Buffalo Chicken pizza. They use buffalo sauce instead of pizza sauce, then pile it high with cheese and buffalo chicken. Other specialty pizzas include a Pittsburgh Steak, Meatlovers, Spinach and Feta, and a Pro Bowl Pie, which is their take on a classic Hawaiian pizza.
Speaking of wings, their version is very good, and it complements a good selection of appetizers. I usually get the boneless chicken tenders and they are large with a generous tossing of sauce. The usual appetizer suspects are listed on the menu, such as breadsticks, cheesesticks, nachos, potato skins, and onion rings, among others.
As mentioned earlier, black and gold dominates the décor. Plenty of television sets are scattered around to watch the big game, and there are a few arcade games to keep the kids entertained. This place gets packed at night and on the weekends, especially if there is a popular game on television or after a local little league game. Take this into consideration if you order food for delivery, because sometimes it can take an hour or so to make it to your house. I figured this out awhile ago so I plan accordingly. Better yet, I eat there and soak up the sports atmosphere and enjoy a Rolling Rock on tap.
If you live in the Spring Texas area or are visiting there, I highly recommend Steel City Pizzeria for their fantastic fresh pizzas and fun atmosphere.
