Stamp Me!

Rubber stamps are images or patterns which are embedded onto a piece of rubber. After applying ink to the pattern, the pattern can then be reproduced by pressing this stamp against another media, like paper or card, for example.

The rubber is often placed onto a more solid object such as wood so that the stamp itself is more stable and solid. It also helps produce a clearer image as the rubber has something pressing against it from either side, applying pressure more evenly across the print.

Rubber stamps are used on a regular basis in places of work and in arts and crafts as a form of recreation. There are many play sets available aimed at young children which consist of rubber stamps and water based inks which are non-toxic and do not stain. However, the stamps referred to in this article are mainly used in businesses, corporations and education.

Stamps which are specific to the business sector often include the business' name, corporate logo and other important information which certifies that the logo belongs to a certain company. Stamping a document is a simple way of verifying that it is official and not forged. Such stamps are designed to make life a bit easier.

Many offices find rubber stamping invaluable as a variety of messages can be transferred onto paper quickly and effectively.

For example, date stamps can be applied by applying pressure to the desired media. They can also be altered easily so that they display the correct date, meaning that it can be used on any day of the year.

Other stamps commonly used include mail stamps, inspection stamps and deposit stamps. Address stamps can be used by any individual to imprint their address on any documents and save time. The application is fast and the print itself can be customised into any style.

Alongside stickers, schools also use rubber stamps to promote good behaviour amongst children. 'Well done' stamps and smiley faces are excellent rewards as they give the children an incentive to try harder and be rewarded again. There are a variety of stamps available depending on the message needed to be put forward by the teacher.

For example, the 'You're a Star!' stamp denotes an unconditional reward whereas the 'Keep trying' stamp suggests that the child has almost achieved their target. Rubber stamps are a quick and effective way of commenting on children's work, passing on praise and/or giving an incentive for them to persevere with the work set.
