Star Wars Miniatures
If you're any kind of Star Wars fan, or know one, then you know about the board game from Wizards of the Coast "Star Wars Miniatures." If you don't know then I'll tell you a little about it.
The game was originally released to the public in 2004, but is still a very popular game among fans of the movies. Each player will build a squad whose strength is rated by a point system. Each squad is associated to a faction, then the players will battle between the factions using the squads to attack each other. There are a lot of scenario sets to choose from, all based in the Star Wars universe, and revolving around the story lines of the movies. Figures are sold in packs called Star Wars Miniatures booster packs.
In the game players will select from ten different factions, and assemble a squad from the characters available for that faction. A point total will be agreed on, usually 100, 150, or 200 points. There are several formats of play, but I will discuss free-for-all, it is the most commonly used in tournaments. This format is as the name implies, everybody for himself!
At this point a map will be chosen for the game. Maps assist in determining positioning of the characters, visibility, weapons ranges and movement. The map is a 1" grid with a layout of a particular area that will describe the area of game play. Movement and attack type and ranges are determined by the individual squad member.
Game objectives vary as much as the imagination of the players will allow, but the game winner is determined by the player with the most victory points, up to the squad limit or over. Victory points are awarded by defeating the enemy, and receiving points equal to the cost of the character defeated. There is also a gambit variation where a player scores 5 points for remaining within 4 squares of a given point for one turn, this is to discourage a player from hiding.
A 20 sided dice is used in combat to determine attack success and damage, the d20 is also used throughout the game to check various actions of interest. When a characters hit points have been exceeded, that character is assumed dead and removed from play. There are several features of this game that make it worth checking out, force powers, and commander effects in particular. All in all, Star Wars Miniatures, is a game that will keep you entertained for hours, or days.
