Starting a Lawn Maintenance Business

By | Jun 13, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

Gardening and lawn maintenance is the number one most expensive hobby of Americans; are you ready to cash in on that hobby? Starting a landscaping business is a smart move; the equipment is easy to attain and it is a business plan that literally has limitless expansion potential. Here's what you need to do to start a landscaping or lawn maintenance business. The fortunate part of starting a landscaping business is that the startup fees are not sky high; typically you will have many of the necessary tools and equipment, and even if you don't, you're still looking at an initially investment that is significantly less than other business start ups. Decide how much your landscaping business will charge per job, and when, if ever, you will get to a point where you will want to hire employees.

Come up with a business plan. A landscaping business plan needs to be as well groomed as the lawns you're going to beautify, so don't cut any corners on your plan. Make sure that you outline your landscaping business goals, your funding sources and expected profit rate (especially important if you are looking for start up funds), and how you will advertise.

Become a guru at everything lawn and garden. If you are going to be starting a landscaping business, you are going to have to be able to answer the question "is this a weed or a flower"?. Many people have become aggressive, avid gardeners; you are going to have to do the same before you start scrapping together your landscaping business plan. Make sure that you know your stuff, and that you are able to deliver a level of detail and quality in your landscaping business that is admirable and sure to get you business referrals.

Get all of the equipment for starting a landscaping business, and a means for hauling it. Make sure that you have all the tool basics, and then invest in a vehicle that is as neat, tidy, and sharp looking as your landscaping business plan is. Your landscaping business vehicle is going to be a driving, honking, hauling source of advertising for your services, so make sure that it's presentable and that it touts your small business logo, name, and contact info.

Start advertising. Remember to put your business contact information on your landscaping business truck as this will serve as free advertising every time you're out on a job. Always have a business card on hand and strive to provide the best services in town; referrals alone can be enough to get a landscaping business off the ground successfully.
