Compared to the paper production, plastic bags when produced generates less greenhouse emission, has less than 70 percent energy consumption and produces less than 80 percent less waste. The production of plastic bags uses less water by 4 percent compared to its alternatives.

In the U.S. alone 80 percent of the polyethylene the kind of plastic used in making plastic bags is made from natural gas. Since the bag itself is the embodiment of energy which is natural gas, recycling plastic bags means recycling energy itself.

The plastic bags which most of us use in the grocery stores are either Type 2 or high density polyethylene film and Type 4 or linear low density polyethylene film which can be recycled by many locations including your local supermarket. Plastic Bags that Can Be Recycled

Plastic bags that you can bring to the store to be recycled are bags that are labeled as number 2 which is HDPE or those which are labeled as number 4 or LLDPE. Grocery bags and retail bags which has no hard plastic or any string handles. Bags for dry cleaning without hanger and any paper and plastic bags for newspapers can be recycled as well. Food storage bags like bread bags, cereal bags and crackers. Plastic wraps from certain products like toilet paper, napkins, paper towels, and even diapers.

The bags must be made sure as clean and empty. If certain plastic food wraps has residual food in it or painted, these substances can cause contamination for the state recycling plastic bags.

The Process

Now that you were able to bring the recyclable plastics to the grocer for collection the process for state recycling plastic wraps has finally begun. Since plastic bags are thermoplastic materials they can be recycled by heating to make it become soft and cooling to make it hard again.

The gathered plastic bags are brought to a recycling plant for the plastic to be melted down. The plastic which by then has softened is pushed through the extruder. The plastic then now is shaped like a long thread of pasta. The plastic is then cut into many pellets or cast in a mould. It is then cooled and the result is a piece of composite lumber made of plastic or thousands of plastic pellets that could be used in making other products made of plastic.

Many places like San Francisco had decided the banning of the use of plastic bags but this will not literally solve the problem or find a reduction on the amount of waste under our sewers or over our landfills.  Nothing will change because individuals will have to shift to another form of litter which in the case of San Francisco paper bags.

Such measures had only created more problems for the environment as well as the energy wasted in production. Other communities have taxes on plastic bags but they were able to find that their efforts had the opposite effect on the environment.

Even if we stop producing plastic bags now and later tomorrow ban its use the damage done by the improper use of plastic bags has been done. It will haunt all of us even the generations next to us. The best thing we can do now is change how we use plastic bags. That is why we have to be responsible and start state recycling plastic bags.
