Step Up With Hummer H1 Side Steps
If you are one of the few 'new' owners of an H1, you have the rare opportunity of having one of the finest off-road vehicles ever produced. But you probably noticed one very important item missing from this prestigious vehicle, namely a means to easily enter the cab from the ground. The ground clearance on a stock Hummer H1 with standard 16.5x7-inch rims sporting 37x12.50R16.5 tires is precisely sixteen inches. Now, mind you, that is ground clearance. The distance from the ground to the threshold of the front doors is approximately twenty-two inches. That is quite a distance even for younger drivers and their passengers to overcome for entrance into the behemoth. What is really needed is a pair of Hummer H1 side steps.
The general approach to side steps is in the form of metallic tubes that are mounted to the rocker panels under the doors. Hummer nerf bars run parallel to the body with each end curving back in towards the body and are mounted to the rocker panels. Most of these 'running board' types of side steps have flattened indentations in the tubing to safely accommodate one's foot as he stands on it to gain entrance to the cab or rear seat.
Another method for side steps are found in individual steps that are bracketed to the frame just under the rocker panels. The unique style point for this form of side step is that it does not run the entire length of the rocker panels. Rather the units are approximately eight inches in length, just large enough for one foot to fit onto it. Each door can have its own side step and they can be adjusted to height for each individual door. These particular Hummer accessories are manufactured from very durable high quality t304 stainless steel. The beauty of t304 is the greater incidence of chrome and nickel within its composition that it renders it non-magnetic. That means less chance of corrosion and longer lasting beauty for the finish.
A novelty type of side step, which really is a rear 'loop' step for the Hummer H1 is made by GOBI. It is called the Gobi Hummer Recovery loop step and is designed to fit on the rear of the vehicle. GOBI sells them as a set of two. When not in use they are stowed flush to the vehicle out of sight inside the recovery loop. When you wish to use them just pull up the tow loop and twist the recovery step cross bar and drop the loop. The unit's capacity is up to 1000 pounds and is advertised as the strongest step for off-road use.
One other place that you might want to consider for a convenience step is in the rear. One manufacturer makes a flip step that mounts in the trailer hitch receiver and flips up when not in use. When the step is needed, the step is flipped down for strong, easy access to the rear of the roof rack.
The adventurer, off-road explorer can really appreciate the go-anywhere capabilities of the Hummer H1. And as far as entry into his gigantic steed, he also can appreciate Hummer H1 side steps.
