Recalling current information like where we left our car keys and the name of a person we just met are only a couple of the abilities of our amazing memories. Utilize as many of your senses as you can when you're presented with information. When meeting someone new, for example, play close attention to their face and carefully listen to their name. Visual learners should write the information down or visualize it in their head. If you are an auditory learner, as opposed to a visual learner, try tape recording conversations or repeat information out loud to help yourself remember.

Techniques to improve your short term memory can also be beneficial to you in other ways. Keeping your mind in top condition takes more that memory tricks, you need plenty of rest and exercise as well. Another way to better your short term memory and improve your ability to retain information is through effective management of stress. Also, eat a balanced diet and avoid cigarettes and other tobacco products. Amongst other things, smoking induces a hypoxic state to the brain affecting the brain's ability to function as effectively.
