What, and where, is Strawberry Street Cafe?

Strawberry Street Cafe has been an elegant, but causal, dining institution in ‘The Fan District’ of Richmond, Virginia, serving American cuisine, since 1976.

‘The Fan District,’ an historic section of Richmond, Virginia, is a lively neighborhood full of stately residences, eclectic, locally owned shops and boutiques, and historically significant sites. ‘The Fan,’ for short, sits east of ‘Carytown’ and the ‘Museum District’ and west of ‘Monroe Ward.’ ‘The Fan’ takes its rather unusual name from the fact that this community is geographically situated in the shape of a fan. Most of the homes in ‘The Fan’ were built during the early 1900 hundreds (many others during the later part of the 1800s), and the dominant architectural style is Edwardian (1901 to 1914).

While Strawberry Street Cafe isn’t quite this historical, it is, no less, a prominent fixture in this neighborhood. While, say, ‘The Jefferson Hotel’ is famous for their Gone with the Wind staircase, Strawberry Street Cafe is known for their lush salad bar, presented in a vintage clawfoot bathtub and “filled with fresh vegetables, fruits, prepared salads and homemade soups.” (Quote from!about-us)

What's good to eat at Strawberry Street Cafe?

A more accurate question would be:  is everything at Strawberry Street Cafe yummy? And the answer is a resounding, ‘YES!’ Every meal I’ve ever eaten at Strawberry Street Cafe has been wonderful, and their service is always topnotch.

I will say, though, that I’ve never eaten their brunch or their quiche, but several of my ‘non cooking’ friends do, regularly, and they report their brunch, and their quiches are no less delicious than their other lunch and dinner offerings.

So, here’s a sample of some of my favorite menus choices from Strawberry Street Cafe:

            “Grilled Chicken Quesadilla”

            “Black Bean Nachos”

            “Bruccetta Pizza”

            Homemade Soups:

            “French Onion Soup”

            “Black Bean Soup”

            “Cream of Crab Soup”

            Sandwiches and Burgers:

            “Broiled Maryland Crab Cake Sandwich”

            “Blackened Chicken Wrap”

***I could eat their “onion rings” by the dump truck load!

            Café Entrées:

            “Broiled Maryland Crab Cakes”

            “Chicken Chesapeake”

            “Chicken Pot Pie”

            Specialty Favorites:

            “Chicken Chimichanga”

           “Chocolate Truffle Cake”

            “Snickers Bar Pie”

            “Crème Brûlée”

Also, they have a full bar, whereby you can order diverse drinks, beers, and wines to accompany your excellent meal.

But if you’re still not convinced, consider the fact that, in 2010, Strawberry Street Cafe was voted #3, by Richmond Magazine, as the “Best Fan Restaurant” and tied for #3 as the “Best First Date” venue.

Speaking of first dates.

Aside from the sumptuous cuisine, and multiple chocolate desserts, there’s just something romantic about Strawberry Street Cafe. Maybe it’s their towering, emerald tin ceiling. Maybe it’s their warm, rich, polished wood and cozy, private booths for two. Maybe it’s the subdued lighting, with a candle and fresh flowers adorning each table at night. Maybe it’s the exquisite stained glass and wood arch, stretching from the clawfoot bathtub salad bar to the back of the dining room. Maybe it’s the charming chalk artwork on the walls, drawn by members of their staff, and hanging above the row of booths.

Whatever the reason or the season, Strawberry Street Cafe offers a romantic dining experience. And with their reasonable prices, and ample servings, a lunch or dinner date at Strawberry Street Cafe, makes for a luxurious, and cheap, date. Couple lunch or dinner, at Strawberry Street Cafe, with a historic tour of ‘The Fan,’ and make your date even more romantic.

During the fall, park your car along Monument Avenue, and stroll this historical avenue, hand in hand, savoring the fiery foliage of the centuries’ old trees. And during Christmas, pick a mild evening, and do the same; this time, relishing the gorgeous Yuletide decorations, gracing Monument’s stately old, Gilded Age mansions. And when spring rolls around, leave your winter hibernation, and join the fun of ‘Easter on Parade,’ on Monument. Finally, if you’re looking to venture away from ‘The Fan,’ then check out Agecroft Hall during the summer, when her lovely formal gardens are exploding in vibrant blooms. And after all that exploring, you’ll both be ready for a hearty meal at Strawberry Street Cafe.
