Streaming Netflix Movies: Frequently Asked Questions

By | Mar 7, 2011 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

While Netflix has millions of happy customers, some of us who are just now considering the service may be unfamiliar with how it works. Although it's not really a big committment, finding the answers to your questions is important before diving in.

1. I've heard that Netflix movies can be streamed to your TV now, how does that work?
Yes, you can stream Netflix movies directly to your TV now. However, you will need some special equipment to do this. One option is a new TV. It would have to be an internet connected TV that has a Netflx widget. Most major manufacturers offer these TVs so it shouldn't be hard to find.

If a new TV isn't in your future, then you could consider a set top box or other Netflix compatible peripheral device that provides Netflix streaming.  Apple TV and the Roku player are two affordable options. Each cost around $99. There are also a variety of Blu Ray players that provide this capability and even gaming consoles and home theater systems.  With these devices, you can access your Netflix library, select a movie, and begin watching it within seconds.

2. How quickly can I begin watching a movie after I select it?
Generally speaking, within a few seconds. Downloading movies requires that you wait until the entire video is downloaded, streaming allows you to begin watching right away.

3. Can I access my Netflix movies on my cell phone?
Many people hope to be able to enjoy their Netflix movies and TV shows on mobile devices while they are out and about. The ability to do this is currently expanding. At this time, smartphones like Windows Phone 7 devices and the iPhone can provide Netflix movie  streaming. Android devices with the Snapdragon platform can as well. More smartphones should follow in the future. The new Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming system is also a Netflix mobile device. The iPad and iPod Touch are also compatible.

4. What is the Netflix library like?
It's big, very big. Netflix has over a hundred thousand movies and TV shows available. The number of movies that are available to stream is currently less than the total library however, but it's always expanding. There are thousands of titles available to stream to your TV, computer, or mobile device.  They have movies in every genre, family, drama, kids, horror, comedy, indie films, foreign films, action adventure, and so forth.

5. How much will it cost?
You can start with a free 30 day trial if you would like. The monthly cost is dependent upon how many movies you want to be able to view in a given month. Their $9.99/month plan allows you to view as many movies as you would like in a month, but you can have only one DVD out at a given time. Most plans allow you to get DVDs through the mail and stream movies as well. They do have a "streaming only" option that costs $7.99/month.  The attractive part of the deal however is that unlike many things in life, there is no committment. If you decide to cancel the service at any time, you can do that. There is no termination fee and no committment whatsoever.

6. Are there other movie streaming alternatives?
Sure. Hulu Plus, Amazon Video on Demand, Vudu, CinemaNow, and even RedBox is looking toward streaming movies online. You can find information online about each of these, comparing the selection and costs.
