With the high cost of college these days, it's difficult to make ends meet for your college education. The government is cutting back their education budget; there is rampant and rising unemployment in the United States. Traditionally, parents would help pay for your education but with a tight economy, most parents are not contributing towards their children's education.

Now, as a student you pretty much have two choices for your loans – federal student loans or private student loans. The type of loan you get will depend entirely on what you are looking for and your personal credit history.

If you want to get student loans for people with bad credit, the federal student loans are your best bet. The reason is that federal loans do not look at your credit history as a factor. This means you won't be docked with sky-high interest rates for having bad credit. Now you typically have two federal loans that will be given out: Perkins federal loans and Stafford federal loans. Neither requires a credit check. The Stafford loan can come, depending on your financial need, as either unsubsidized or subsidized. The subsidized version is better because the government will pay your interest while in school.

Now, government student loans are all no cosigner loans. So ideally, if you have bad credit and no cosigner available, the government loans are your best bet. But, a lot of people are finding that government loans don't provide enough money to pay for your entire education. You will need to make up the difference with parental support or a job.

For some people, neither of these are an option. However, you can choose to apply for a private student loan. Private student loans, unlike government student loans, do require you to have good credit history. If you don't have credit history, you will need a cosigner – usually.

However, it's possible to get a private student loan without a cosigner if you go through a bad credit lender. Bad credit lenders will typically charge you much higher interest rates, so if you go this route, you should do some careful shopping around to ensure you don't actually get ripped off.

Student loans without cosigners are certainly possible – you just need to spend the time trying to find them. With enough effort and careful research, you should be able to find a loan just suited for you.
