Summer reading programs for children are very important. Much like a muscle that goes weak with a lack of use, the brain is a also muscle that needs a workout. You would not expect an Olympic athlete to train for ten months, then take ten weeks off, and then win a medal. A musician cannot practice for ten months, take two months off, and then be expected to give a concert without striking some wrong notes.
So why do parents permit their children to lose all the hard work they gained during the school year?
Children who do not read in July and August lose some of the progress they made during the school year. Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program for Children 2010
This program is for children in grades one through six. Participation is simple. Children can read any kind of books that peak their interest, for a total of eight. Parents need to download the form from the Barnes and Noble website. Depending on the child's age, either she or a parent can help fill out the title of the book and their favorite part. Once the eight books for the summer reading program are completed, bring the form to your local Barnes and Noble bookstore. Your child can select a free book from a list of various paperback titles.

Borders is calling it's summer reading program Double Dog Dare and is for children ages twelve and under. Read any ten books of your choice and write the titles down on the downloadable form. Bring the form to any Borders, Borders Express, or Waldenbooks store an choose from ten different book titles.

If you have a branch of TD Bank nearby, then your child who is age eighteen or younger can earn money just by reading books in their annual summer reading program for children. All s/he has to do is read 10 books over the summer and TD Bank will deposit $10 into your new or existing Young Saver account. This offer is only good once a summer, not multiple times.

Another way to keep your children reading this summer is to check out your local library's summer reading program. Each library's program is different and meets the needs of it's own community. You may want to call your local branch or check online to see when you have to sign your child up.

If you are a motivated parent, you can design your own summer reading program to fit the needs of your child. You know exactly what rewards your child likes.
