If you live in area that is prone to flooding, sump pump drainage is important, because it prevents water that is accumulating around the exterior of your home from entering as well as remove any water that has managed to seep in. They are usually installed in the basements, first floors or in a crawl spaces just outside a residence.

There are four sump pumps system that are typically used; one is powered by water, the other two by electricity. They all work excellently to protect homes from the devastating effects of water damage whether it be caused by heavy rain or flooding. The effects can be severe enough to force you to have to leave your home, or as unnoticeable enough to eventually cause mold and significant wood rot to its walls and structure.

The pedestal sump pump is electric with its motor located at the top of its horizontal body. The pump is activated by a switch, which senses water when it reaches a certain height. Pedestal sump pumps are used most often in basements that tend to have water seepage or flooding.

The submersible sump pump drainage systems are also electric and designed to work underwater using the same water-activated switch. They are much quieter than the pedestal sump pump and can be more expensive before of this. Pedestal and submersible sump pumps can be purchased in plastic or cast iron styles. Obviously, the plastic systems are less expensive, and the cast iron systems are guaranteed to last longer.

The water powered sump pump drainage system runs from water pressure within your home's plumbing system. It is activated by a switch that senses water and are as good as the electrical systems but require no electricity. Many people used the water powered system as a back up in case the electricity in your home fails.

New types of sump pump drainage systems called 'floor sucker pumps' take water that has entered an area down to less than an eighth of an inch on floors, roofs or ground. There drainage systems have variable flow rates and can be manually or automatically run.

What ever system you decide on purchasing should always make sure there is a check value to prevent water from flowing back through the drainage system into the pump when it is not operating. This can cause the sump pump to work when it is not needed.

Any quality sump pump drainage system should last about ten years if treated probably and checked for preventative maintenance. These systems will work repeatedly to protect your home from water, mold, wood rot and problems within your home plumbing systems caused by excessive flooding. Sump pump drainage systems can be found by searching the Internet for 'sump pumps' or by checking your local Yellow Pages. If neighbors in the area have sump pump drainage systems, ask them how their systems works, and are they recommended?
