As a pasty white person who burns from the slightest exposure to the sun, I gave up on tanning a long time ago. I have finally decided, however, to give self-tanners a shot. Although I love my pale skin in the winter, for the summer I want some of that sun-kissed glow. I was in the drugstore and I came across Neutrogena’s Build A Tan Gradual Sunless Lotion. It was less than twelve dollars for the first bottle and half-off for the second.
After you bathe and exfoliate, apply the self-tanner on your skin, like any other lotion. You are surprised: the tan has not appeared! The catch with this stuff is that it goes on clear like a lotion but reacts with sugars in your skin to create a tan a few hours later.
After one application, you will have a nice, light tan. Your friends and family will notice, but the tan is still natural looking and definitely not orange. For a darker tan, you would need to keep reapplying the product for several days.
Unfortunately, this self-tanner tends to leave streaks on the skin. In addition, it does not smell very good and the scent lingers long after you have applied it. You also need to make sure that you wash your hands after applying the product because it will look horrible on the hands. When you bathe again, some of the product will be removed by the water. Also, this self-tanning lotion dirties your sheets.
All in all, the Neutrogena Build A Tan Gradual Sunless Lotion is a decent product for those who want a slight tan. This is the product for you if you do not want to spend a lot of money for some slight color. If you are looking for a luxurious self-tanning product that is worth the price, I would not recommend this self-tanner. I will use up my two bottles but I will not be repurchasing this as I wish to have a darker tan.
