Superman was created in 1932 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two friends who met in high school in Cleveland. This character was designed and "published" for the first time in their fanzine Science Fiction.
After several years of this super-hero going completely unnoticed, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster are marked by the publishing house DC Comics in 1938. Superman then experienced a second birth in the Action Comics magazine.
It was then that Siegel and Shuster imagine the universe surrounding the super hero: his Kryptonian origins, its triple identity under the name of Superman, Kal-El and Clark Kent, the city of Metropolis, the character of Lois Lane and of course the famous yellow, red and blue costume, with an S in the middle of his chest ...
Unfailing enthusiasm
Therefore, the character of "Man of Steel" truly inspired the public and Action Comics magazine sold a half million copies per issue!
The success of his adventures involves the appearance of a new genre, the "comic book" and other superheroes are created Batman in 1939, followed by Atom, Flash, Green Lantern and Captain America in 1940.
By 1941, the adventures of Superman cartoons are adjusted by the Fleischer Studios. The first of many films dedicated to this hero came out shortly thereafter, in 1948.
Superman on screen
From 1978 to 1987, Christopher Reeve embodied Superman in four films with great success:
• Superman (1978);
• Superman 2 (1980);
• Superman 3 (1983);
• Superman 4 (1987).
More recently Brandon Routh interpreted the character in Superman Returns (2006). Moreover, the super-hero should make his return to cinema in 2012 in a film by Zack Snyder entitled "Superman: Man of Steel."
On television, Superman appeared in the guise of Dean Cain in the series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman aired from 1993 to 1997.
Finally, since 2001, Tom Welling embodies the Clark Kent in Smallville, a series that focuses on the youth of Superman.
