Surgical Technician Training

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a surgical tech, by now you may have discovered that surgical technician training can come in many forms.  In general surgical tech education is done through formal training programs usually conducted at junior colleges or vo-tech schools.  However, you can also find surgical technologist training programs at other facilities such as hospitals, in the military, or universities.  Prior to entering training, applicants will be required to have graduated from high school.  Surgical technician training programs take anywhere from nine months to twenty four months to complete.  Upon completion of the program, individuals will receive a certificate, a diploma, or an associate’s degree.

Surgical tech training is done through in-class course work and hands-on training in clinical settings.  The types of courses you can anticipate taking during the surgical technician training include:

  • anatomy
  • physiology
  • microbiology
  • pharmacology
  • professional ethics
  • medical terminology
  • care and safety of patients during surgery
  • sterilization techniques
  • surgical procedures

While in training, students also learn to sterilize instruments, prevent and control infection; handle special drugs, solutions, supplies and equipment.

For additional knowledge and a more favorable employment outlook, surgical technician certification can be achieved.  Surgical technician training can lead to certification in two ways.  First, a surgical tech can be certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (CAAHEP) or by taking a test from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).  In order to be qualified to sit for the NCCT test, you have to complete an accredited surgical technician training program; go through a two-year on-the-job program through a hospital; or get seven years of experience in the field.

Currently, there are 450 accredited surgical technician training programs across the nation.  With this many schools to choose from, finding the best program can be difficult.  Here are a few tips to help find the right training.  First, decide if going through the course work will be best done on-line or offline.  Next, you can look at the credentials of the schools (on-line or offline, whichever you’ve chosen) that offer surgical tech training to determine which one you feel with provide the best education. A final tip for choosing a surgical technician training program is, if you need financial assistance to attend classes, investigate financial aid options to be sure your financial obligations can be satisfied.
