B complex is comprised of twelve different water-soluble vitamins, all of which are vital for many different functions—from energy and metabolism to nervous system functioning to red blood cell production. Vit-B includes some of the most important nutrients out there, so it pays to be aware of the signs of deficiency so you can recognize them when they occur and increase your B intake.

Some of the common vit-B deficiency symptoms include:

  • Dandruff
  • Numbness or tingling of the extremities
  • Depression
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Poor coordination
  • Muscle weakness
  • Color blindness

One of the most famous symptoms of deficiency of vit-B is anemia.

What is Anemia?

Anemia is when your body can’t produce enough red blood cells. As a result, you don’t have enough blood to carry oxygen throughout your body—and your body needs this oxygen to fuel the consumption of food to produce energy. Some of the signs of anemia include fatigue, lethargy, difficulty concentrating, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, chest pain, and heart palpitations.

Who Is At Risk for Vitamin B Deficiency?

Vegetarians are particularly at risk for deficiency because some B vitamins, such as cobalamin, are found mainly in animal sources.

Another population at risk for deficiency is people with digestive problems or intestinal conditions that might impair your body’s ability to absorb vitamin B from your food. Those with autoimmune disorders might also be deficient in vit-B.

Alcoholics are also at risk, since alcohol can deplete your body of B vitamins. In fact, I like to take a B complex anytime I have a hangover. (This can also happen with drugs other than alcohol, including some prescription medications.)

Where Can I Get More Vitamin B?

Some of the best vitamin B foods include liver, fish, beef, and spinach. Now, one thing you should keep in mind is that some B vitamins are very sensitive to heat, and break down when you cook them. For that reason, it might be a good idea to use a good vitamin B complex supplement to make sure you get enough of this important supplement. Of course, in an ideal world we’d get all the nutrients we need from our food; but in today’s world, that might not be realistic.
