Symptoms of salmonella poisoning

Salmonella poisoning is one of the most common bacterial foodborne illness reported in the World. The poisoning is caused by eating foods that are contaminated with bacteria. The effects of poisoning can vary from person to person. For some people, the poisoning can be so mild that it often gets unnoticed. Symptoms of Salmonella can be more pronounced and more persistent for those people with weakened immune systems. Approximately 600 deaths are caused by Salmonella infections in the U.S. every year.

There are many types of food items that salmonella is found in. They can be vegetables,meat, milk, poultry, and eggs. Salmonella is found even in water also. Poor hygiene in handling and consumption of food is a major cause for Salmonella poisoning.

Salmonella bacteria has an incubation period of 12 hours and symptoms appear between 8 to 48 hours after consuming the contaminated food.

The symptoms of salmonella poisoning

Cramps, abdominal pain and Diarrhea are among the most common symptoms of salmonella poisoning. Stools will be extremely loose and watery.The person may feel Nausea and may start vomitting. Headaches, muscle pain and joint pain are also reported in some people. A persistent stomach ache with irritating bowel movements is also a common symptom.

The victim's body may also develop a fever which often gets confused with flu. In most cases, the symptoms will last for 3 to 4 days. But in young children and infants, the dehydration caused by diarrrhea can be life threatening. If you find blood in the stool and there is no improvment in condition after 24 hours, you should consult a doctor.In some rare cases, the bacteria may enter the bloodstream and infect other organs also.
