Synthetic Versus Natural Diamonds

Aside from their resilience and beauty, the high price of a diamond comes in great part form the fact that it is rare and hard to mine. So it's no surprise that diamond industry giants like DeBeers are worried about the effects of high-quality, lab-made diamonds into the market. With diamonds no longer a rare commodity, why would people pay more for them?

DeBeers is trying to combat the intrusion of lab diamonds into the industry by providing major jewelers, free of charge, with authentication machines that differentiate between natural and man-made diamonds. These machines are c the DiamondSure and the DiamondView.

But it is hard to distinguish between so-called synthetic diamonds and minded diamonds, largely because there are no fundamental differences. If anything, synthetic diamonds ted to possess fewer flaws.

Some of the differences between the two kinds of diamonds include the fact that, for the most part, multi-carat diamonds are hard to produce inside the lab. But as synthetic diamond production technology improves, this problem is becoming a thing of the past. Apollo Diamonds, one of the original companies that working on developing a diamond manufacturing method, uses a technique called chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which can produce larger diamonds very easily.

In nature, colorless diamonds are common and colored ones are rare (and thus more expensive). This dynamic is threatened by the fact that colored diamonds are easy to produce in the lab, while white diamonds are harder.

Professional jewelers using high-tech equipment might be able to detect synthetic diamonds by their distinct growth patterns. Also, man-made gem diamonds have fewer inclusions than natural diamonds. Inclusions are considered flaws and they negatively affect a diamond's clarity grading, so this is a point in favor of lab-made gems.

The international diamond mining industry, however, is countering the developments of synthetic diamonds by insisting that the irreplaceable value of a natural diamond's geological history is what matters. Diamonds were originally a symbol of lasting love precisely because they were forged thousands of years ago at the center of the earth, not last week in a lab.
