Taking Care of Your Dry Skin in the Winter Months

The winter months are harsh for your skin. The wind, cold, lack of sun, low humidity and being indoors with the heated air for more than several months are all extremely cruel to your skin. These elements create dry, itchy and even cracked skin all over your body, especially the face. Taking care of your dry skin in the winter months is very important. There are some things you can do to make certain this happens.

Hydrate

One of the best things you can do is to drink plenty of water. The more water the better. With the low relative humidity outside of your body, hydration is wonderful for your body from the inside out and does wonders to relieve your dry and itchy skin.

Moisture leaves the body faster with colder air and low humidity. Drink as much as possible when you can.

Use Moisturizer Soap

Take care with the soap you use for bathing. Bathing and washing your body and face with the wrong soap can make them even drier. Soaps contain surfactants that can take away moisture from the skin. Use soap that moisturizer and doesn’t add to the problem you are trying to solve. The ideal soap for your body this time of year includes moisturizer soap lotions.

Take Special Care of Your Face

You expose your face more than any other body part in the cold weather. To take care of your face in cold weather. One of the most important things you can do for it is using a moisturizer after washing. Even with oily skin keep away from facial soaps that strip the moistness from it. Use a moisturizer twice a day if you can. Once in the morning and again in the evening is a way to protect it from dry skin issues.

Sunscreen is vital as a protective or preventive measure. Use sunscreen containing moisturizer especially when spending anytime outdoors and don’t forget those dry chapped lips. Apply lip gloss and chap lip balm to safeguard your lips from the tough outdoor atmosphere when it is cold.

Moisturizing Lotions

Lotions for your entire body are a wonderful way to cut the byproducts of dry skin such as the itching and cracking. Find a moisturizer lotion and apply lavishly to the body everyday. The best time is immediately following your shower or bath when it is more absorbent. This will assure that not only will the outside of the dermis benefit, but the underlying layers will as well.

Be Gentle With It

Be gentle with it. This is something that isn’t mentioned often enough when taking care of your body and face skin surfaces. Use products that are especially designed for dry skin.

Don’t leave it exposed for longer than necessary in the elements. If you live in a climate that has conditions that make the outside temperature below zero or dangerous enough to cause frostbite be especially careful. Wear appropriate winter wear to cover any exposed parts  when you go outdoors. Avoid revealing it to severe cold elements longer than necessary.

Take shorter baths and showers with less hot water. Longer baths and showers in hotter water strips the amount of natural oils that it contains. Help it by applying moisturizer products immediately after taking your shower or bath to get the most benefit from these products.

There are some products on the market to add to bath water or shower soaps that will add some of those natural oils back in. There are several which will even keep it protected after you dry off.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Believe it or not your diet can affect the health of your skin year round. A healthy diet is especially important when your skin needs extra fortifying from the harsh indoor and outdoor conditions. There is a difference in how it looks and feels when eating a healthy diet full of vitamins and minerals that will for the health of your body and skin.
