Taking precautions when using a trailer dolly

By | Sep 16, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

A trailer dolly is a convenient tool to use when you want to have your car pulled by a truck in cases of moving to a new house or when you need an extra car to use when leaving for out of town trips.

It is a very convenient equipment that will help you bring everything you might need with you on the road. However, there are safety precautions that you must keep in mind when using this equipment along with the truck and the vehicle to be towed.

The first thing that you must not forget is to check your car's owner's manual and review the procedures to ensure that you perform the tasks in hooking the car with the truck or trailer van in the most correct manner. The car must have a lockable steering. Then, the trailer dolly must be already attached to the truck appropriately before loading the car to the tow dolly. Never load possessions, people or pets, and most specifically highly valuable possessions to the car when it is towed. It increases the weight on the tow dolly. Usually, the minimum allowable weight is 4,300 pounds.

Mid-engine and rear-engine mounted vehicles should not be towed into the dolly. Take note also that cars with low front end or shall we say lowered cars may not be very ideal to tow because they do not have enough ground clearance to raise the tow dolly platform.

Always remember that it is not a good idea for you to back up the truck while the tow dolly is attached. Much more if the car is already hitched onto the tow dolly. This would lead to very serious damages to the dolly and the car.

This type of tow dolly is actually referred to as a car trailer dolly. There are many other types of tow dollies that work for a variety of different uses. If your purpose is to just have a dolly that will have your car pulled by a truck in the safest way, always look specifically for a car carrier dolly.
