Tattoo expos, conventions, festivals North America
Japanese clay figurines called "dogus," produced 10,000 B. C. - 300 B. C. and found near Osaka in 1974, possess tattoo type markings on their faces and bodies. The history of body art painting has its origins in the Far East, where Japanese men who were fond of diving for fish and shells, decorated their faces and bodies to disguise and protect themselves from the larger fish. In this 21st century, body art for the masses is more an ornamental custom, a genre of artists using the skin as a canvas. Find the date and time, place to visit your next tattoo convention, exposition, festival in North America.

Things to know:
  • Always look at the artist's portfolio before contracting a design. Just because a tattooist is at a convention, doesn't make the artist good.
  • The last part of the expo day will reveal bargains on tee shirts and souvenirs.
  • Call ahead or go online to purchase convention tickets ahead at a discount.
  • Respect the tattoo artist: never touch an artist at work, never leave any food or drink on a table that contains artwork, behave yourself, never interrupt an artist.
  • Looking for a certain popular artist, book ahead of time.

Love the background and the article. Saw a young woman bagging at the super market once with her face totally covered in beautiful, colorful artwork. I asked her about it. She chose tattoos as a way of covering up scarring that resulted from a fire. People have many reasons for tattooing!
