Taupe and Chocolate Brown Bedroom Decorating Ideas and Colors

By | Feb 5, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Brown bedrooms are cozy and gender neutral. You can use a chocolate color with virtually any design style. Plus, it's still neutral so it will appeal to home buyers when you go to sell your house. Here are a few tips for decorating a bedroom with taupe or chocolate brown.

Bring in rich wood tones. Brown paint really compliments wood tones and can highlight a four poster bed or antique nightstands. Conversely you can also use paint to make up for your lack of real wood bedroom furniture. For a contemporary space bring in a rich chocolate brown paint and then upholster your headboard with a cream fabric. Then you can paint all of the rest of your furniture white to match. This allows you to repurpose items that really don't match into more of the look of a bedroom set. This can instantly transform your room from the look of a college dorm to a sophisticated vibe to celebrate your first place.

If all else fails you can paint your bedroom furniture chocolate brown. In modern and contemporary design the focus is on the light in the room and clean lines of the furniture. This means that even really expensive, designer furniture is plain. Plus, there is a tendency to ditch wood grains in contemporary design. You can achieve the same look and give your furniture new life with a dark brown paint. Typically this would be paired with plain white wall colors. For the Tuscan look I like to see some burgundy undertones to the paint. This almost mimics a mahogany type finish but it's much cheaper and can be a DIY project. As long as you have a high gloss finish and the right paint tone this is one of the easiest wood tones to replicate. You won't even need one of those cheesy faux graining tools. Mahogany doesn't show as much grain as most other materials. In this case gold wall colors work the best to complete the Tuscan vibe.

Another option for the Tuscan look is elegant bedding. This way you can even tie in terra cotta and orange tones with your brown paint colors. You won't even have to use more dramatic tones for your walls and instead can stay pretty neutral. Check out a paisley option for this look.

Make an impact with a taupe bedroom. I know what you're thinking; taupe is just a blah color that people with no personality choose right? Actually you probably want your bedroom to be soothing without being cold and taupe is the perfect color for this. It's darker than beige so it will still have a lot of personality. If you don't want the room to look white then bring in bright white curtains, trims, rugs and bedding. This keeps the room neutral but also adds a lot of contrast.

I also like the taupe bedroom idea because gray is such a popular decorating color. However, it might seem a little bit too modern or just doesn't match your furniture. It doesn't tend to work well with wood tone pieces. Instead, you can try out a taupe which will match your furniture and be more muted.

Use an accent color, any accent color. Brown bedrooms can go with almost any accent color you choose. You can even paint your furniture an aqua blue or bright yellow. If you want to stick with neutral colors then try a black, white and taupe color scheme that will have plenty of contrast. Accessorize with black and white photographs. This is also an opportunity where you can bring pink into the room; just a touch of it like a few throws pillows or a chandelier with metal roses on it. Most of the room will seem masculine but you still have a little bit of that balance and femininity in there. Even your husband won't be able to complain about subtle touches because he doesn't have to live in a "pink bedroom".

Brown bedrooms are versatile and they don't have to be blah. Take advantage of the versatility by changing out your bedding and accessories a few times a year for a totally different look. You can transition into a lot of different color palettes and design styles with these neutral colors so you won't have to repaint for a long time.

The other advantage to brown bedrooms is that it matches almost anything. You might not know what to match with orange, pink or turquoise. So it doesn't end up looking like a rainbow mess you should neutralize it with your fabric and carpet. The brighter your accent color the more neutral and lighter the brown you use should be for balance.
