Tax on Fatty Foods Helps People and Doctors

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

The world has a global problem which is obesity according to the American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons (ASBPS). Moreover, they are recommending that a tax be assessed on fatty foods to decrease the obesity health condition.

This is a needed proposal because the World Health Organization (WHO) is exceedingly disturbed about the levels of obesity around the globe today. Their studies show 1 billion overweight adults and 300 million are categorized as being clinically obese. They attribute it to foods which have a high level of saturated and that results directly in to weight gain and inevitably obesity. They claim there should be more marketing and promotion that says many low-fat and high fiber foods are available and accessible.

Dr. Edward Domanskis, the President of ASBPS, claims that if that campaign is not working then the recommendation is to tax just those foods offered that have high saturated fat could sway people away from purchasing them and get on the restaurants to offer more healthy choices. The added tax will be used for more of the causes and cures for obesity.

A similar tax on a consumer product resulted in a 61% reduction in consumption over 40 years along with educating the public of the dangers and health risks according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics. That product was cigarettes. .

Obesity has been categorized as a disease by Medicare as of 2005. As a result, the increased costs for the treatments are insured and funded by all taxpayers. Some good reasons why it is a disease is due to its link to heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, cancer of the uterine, breast and colon. These major health risks just about vanish quickly following bariatric surgery.

In summary, it is a tax that is necessary as research suggest that if obesity continues at its current rate there will not be enough bariatric surgeons to perform liposuction, and other weight loss surgeries never mind handle the workload.
