The thought of teenage car insurance is usually enough to turn a parent's stomach, but it doesn't have to be this way. There are ways to make car insurance for teenagers much more affordable. With a little bit of responsibility and research your teenagers car insurance rates can be much easier to swallow.

It's a well known fact that teenagers get in many more car accidents than the rest of us, and while measures are being put into place to let them get more experience before getting their license, this fact probably won't change any time soon. A car can be a two-ton accident machine, and in the hands of inexperienced teen the odds of an accident are much higher. The most important step to keeping your teenager's car insurance from skyrocketing is to be thorough in teaching them how to drive.

Cheap Teenage Car Insurance

The cheapest car insurance for teenagers is always going to be when they're on their parents insurance plan. In the eyes of the insurance companies, this is a much lower risk to them than if the teen has their own policy. Luckily, there are lots of things that parents and teens can do to help lower the cost.

A teen can keep the price of car insurance down by getting good grades and taking any available driving courses and classes that are available to them. Most insurance companies will offer discounts for both of these things. The good grade discount is the most common, and the teen will usually have to maintain a B average or better (each carrier will have different terms). As for the classes, most high schools offer Driver's Ed which, as long as the class is passed, will get a discount through most insurance carriers. Also, in most cities there are defensive driving courses offered. These classes are valuable for learning to drive, but can also help get cheap car insurance for teenagers.

A parent can lower their premium on teenager car insurance by talking with their insurance carrier to see what discounts they can offer. There are dozens of discounts, and some of them are easy to get. For example, most insurance companies will offer a discount for installing a car alarm or other anti-theft device on a vehicle. A car alarm can be purchased and installed for less than $100, so in the long term you'll save a lot of money and keep your car much safer. Spend some time discussing this with your car insurance agent to see everything that they can offer to you.

If you're between car insurance carriers, it's a good idea to spend a good amount of time doing research on which company will be your next. The rates can vary hugely between two companies for the same family, so be detailed and thorough while you shop around.
