Full Review

Thai Yoga Massage or Thai Massage is a type of yoga massage that originated in India. This practice was meant to embrace and appreciate love and kindness through Meta (Heal through touch).

Thai Yoga Massage has guiding principles just like Anusara Yoga has alignment principles- to work sen-lines all over the body.

In order to perform a Thai Yoga Massage, one must learn a few basic stances:

  • Thai-Chi Stand (stand with right leg facing inward and to the front of the body )
  • Open Diamond (sit with knees open to make a V)
  • Hero pose
  • Warrior pose
  • Namaskar

One must also learn to keep the arms and shoulders straight the whole time moving only the legs, swaying left to right or in whirlpool using core strength. For example a bamboo rock means swaying your body left and right keeping your arms straight the whole time. There is also palming, sweeping, kneeding and some chopping movements that are commonly used in all types of massages in Thai Yoga Massage.

A basic sequence I learned recently in Thai Yoga Massage goes:

  1. Namaskar
  2. Thai Chi Stand and rock
  3. Rolling Pin
  4. Cow Face
  5. Prayer Pose
  6. Palming In-step
  7. Foot Fold
  8. Massage Sen Lines
  9. Milk the Cow
  10. Helicopter
  11. Tree
  12. Knee to Shoulder
  13. Helicopter Flip
  14. Sole Walk
  15. Palming and Thumbing Sen Lines on back
  16. Classic Cobra
  17. Abdomen
  18. Face Massage
  19. Namaskar

In Closing

Please ask your yoga instructor if they offer this style of massage. It's quite relaxing and best if you start with a yoga class and end with a thai yoga massage!
