The 4 Basic Types of Home Security Safes

By | Jun 8, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

It amazing how many people still keep their valuables out on their dresser or in their sox drawer. Many homes still do not have a security safe. Those people go on hoping that they will not fall victim to flood, fire or theft. Unfortunately, at least one of those will occur eventually and it is better to be safe than sorry (no pun intended!).

Owning a safe is an important step in being able to survive one of those natural or man-made problems/disasters. While security safes by themselves won't prevent bad stuff from happening, if used properly, they can make the recovery from an event that much quicker and painless.

There are 4 basic types of home high security safes:

  • Gun Safes-These are probably the most popular and frankly the largest homes safes that you will encounter. They are especially made to hold up to 50 guns. If you own a gun, you should/must own a gun safe. These units can protect not only your weapon, but also protect the children in your household from finding your gun and having a tragic accident.
  • Wall Safes-While these are not often found behind the oil painting in the office like the movies, they do function almost the same way. You simply cut a hole in the wall, use the supplied screws or bolts to secure it to the wall framing and you are done. These units can fit walls as shallow as 3".
  • In Floor Safes-Installing this type of safe requires more careful planning and design. Many are built into the floor by opening a hole and then pouring concrete around the safe enclosure. Regardless of how they are mounted, they are meant to become invisible by placing a piece of carpet or rug over them. Unless you are purposefully looking for them, you would not find this safe.
  • General Safes-These are just like they sound, all purpose. They are typically inexpensive and smaller units that can be purchased at large retailers for less than $150. They can hold your valuables and maybe a pistol. An important point to remember with these safes is that because they are light enough for one person to move, they must be secured so a burglar doesn't simply pick it up and walk off with it.
Choosing a security safe requires matching your needs with the available options for the multiple vendors in the market.
