My Reasons for Exercising

Why Exercising is Great For Me!

I first started exercising during high school when a friend and I joined an aerobics class at the local community center for something to do.  We went twice a week for two months and then I didn’t exercise again until my mom and I joined an exercise class a few months later at the local college.  When that class ended, I stopped exercising for about another year until I joined my first gym.

Joining a gym was not planned and it didn’t have anything to do with a desire to exercise.  I was in my first year at college, saw an advertisement for a free class at the gym and since I like freebies, I signed up for it.  When I went in for my free workout, I left with a two year gym membership.  Since I didn’t want to pay $600.00 for a gym membership and not use it, I went and worked out there a few times a week until I moved to a different state and no longer had access to that gym.

Since I couldn’t afford another gym membership as I was still paying on the first one (I signed a bad contract), I stopped exercising until I discovered at home workouts.  Jane Fonda and Kathy Smith came out with exercises tapes that I could play in my VCR and workout at home.  This was almost 25 years ago and I have never stopped exercising since and here are my top 4 reasons why:

#4: I love sharing my workouts with my online fitness friends

I admit that I love posting my workouts on the online group pages and forums that I belong too. This was never my primary reason to exercise because the online health communities didn’t exist when I began to exercise.  But now I find it highly motivating to log into my various group pages every morning and see what workouts my friends are doing and I also post my own workouts. We congratulate each other and share our struggles and successes.  There are often exercise challenges to workout a certain amount of minutes each day or to try a new workout routine.  Everyone has their own favorite workouts and it is great to see what workouts are working for other people.

#3: I love that exercise helps me manage my stress

I went though a period where I had a lot of stress in my life.  A lot of things that I could not control happened that made my life miserable.  But through it all, I still exercised.  It made me feel good knowing that even if I couldn’t control what was going on around me, that I could at least stay in control of my health.  Since I didn’t have any health issues to worry about during that time, I was that much stronger to work through the difficult periods.

#2: I love that exercise helps keep me healthy

Granted, when I began exercising, I was young and diabetes, heart disease and cancer was not at the top of my mind.  Now that I am older, I have seen the struggles of several people that are diabetic.  At my last annual physical exam a few weeks ago, my weight and cholesterol were at healthy levels.  I know that exercising does not guarantee that I will remain free of major illnesses, but it does lower my risk.  I believe that exercising all of these years has helped with keeping me healthy.

#1: I love that exercise makes me feel great

After a workout, I am in a better mood and I have a feeling of accomplishment.  I am more energetic and I have an overall feeling of wellness.  I notice that when I go more than two days in a row without exercising, I don’t feel as well physically.  I actually feel terrible.  My muscles feel achy and I find it hard to concentrate.  Exercising immediately makes me feel better and it is defiantly worth my time to do so.

I typically exercise 5 days a week for 30 to 40 minutes each time.  I enjoy doing strength training workouts over cardiovascular workouts but I do both.

If you are new to exercise, I suggest that you invest in a good pair of shoes and start slowly and gradually increase your time and intensity levels.

Make sure that if you decide to join a gym that it is conveniently located so that you don’t get discouraged if you have to spend a lot of time driving back and forth.  Please schedule time with a trainer to show you how to properly use the different exercise equipment.

Exercising at Home
Over the years, I worked out both at home and at various gyms.  Currently I prefer working out at home as it is more convenient for my schedule.  I have accumulated a large selection of exercise DVD’s so that my workouts vary and I don’t get bored.  I have also invested in strength training equipment and an exercise bike.

I admit that I don’t always feel like getting up early to exercise before work.  But the health benefits and the way I feel terrific afterwards is very much worth it to me.
