There are a heap of things one must realize when they are in
the process of buying a fresh water aquarium.
Although it’s a lot easier in being able to maintain a freshwater
aquarium as opposed to a saltwater aquarium, there is still a heap to know in
order to maintain the tank correctly, why is this the case you ask? Well one
must learn how to correctly maintain the aquarium in order for the fish, other
marine life and coral to be kept alive. But
let’s understand why a fresh water aquarium is better than a saltwater one.
Well firstly, to maintain a fresh water tank is far easier
than maintaining a saltwater aquarium.
If you’re new to keeping aquariums as a hobby then its best that you
start out with a basic fresh water tank.
That way, you won’t have to endlessly monitor the fish or continue to
maintain the aquarium regimentally.
Further to that, it’s far easier to learn how to maintain a fish tank
with a fresh water tank than it is a saltwater tank for those above
reasons. Once you’ve gained all the
experience necessary to keep a saltwater tank by having a freshwater tank, you
can then convert the original tank into a saltwater aquarium if you so desire.
Fresh water aquariums are also far easier to install and setup. They do not require all the effort, time and
money that are required with the salt water variety. It should be noted that marine life for
saltwater tanks are much more costly and expensive. Even though the fish and coral are very
beautiful and also bring about a calming effect – there’s no point buying them
if you end up killing them through lack of experience in maintaining the tanks.
Further more with a saltwater aquarium you’ll need to find a live rock which is
a biological filter. Depending on the
area in which you live this can be very difficult to find. And even if you do, they’re also very
expensive. This is another reason why a
fresh water aquarium is much preferred for the new comer to the hobby.
The other thing which is important to note here is that
lighting is very important for the saltwater variety. The lighting required and its correct impact
is a very delicate equation. You have to
get it just right otherwise your coral and marine life will simply die out if
you do not get the lighting mix just right.
Furthermore adding to the difficulty in maintaining a acrylic saltwater tank, you
need to constantly monitor the salt levels inside the aquarium. Otherwise if you do not get this mix exactly
right, the fish and marine life will simply get sick and die away.
In short, both types of aquariums need to be maintained with respect to the
water quality but again, in the saltwater type, the mix is very delicate and if
you do not get it exactly right, the fish will simply wither away and die. However in a fresh water aquarium, you can
have varied water quality and the fish will normally be able to survive. This provides for a good learning environment
for the newcomer to the hobby. Those are just some of the reasons why a fresh
water aquarium is so much better than the salt water tank variety.
