The good and the bad with the Alkaline Diet

The Alkaline Diet is a holistic approach to achieving overall better health by eating foods with alkali content which resembles the body’s normal pH level of 7.36 to 7.44. It is said that eating these types of foods will remedy things such as infections, chronic fatigue and frequent colds. This diet is composed of a lot of roots and tubers, fresh fruits, nuts and legumes, and vegetables. The diet is said to help reserve the balance of the blood’s alkalinity without stressing the body’s regulators of acid-based homeostasis.


Foods are broken down in two categories – alkaline or acidic. Your body needs a balance of these two in order to properly digest everything that is put into your body. Unfortunately most people’s diets are mainly acidic. The Alkaline Diet’s aim is to lower the circulating levels of acidic elements in your body by having a minimal intake of food that has high levels of acid. These can include meat, dairy products, white sugar, fish, poultry, white flour, processed foods and caffeine.


Benefits of This Diet


Diets that have a large amount of animal protein can lower your urine pH and make the risk of kidney stones greater. Therefore, eating a vegetable rich diet can raise your urine pH and lower your kidney stone risk. Some research has speculated that an Alkaline Diet can slow muscle waste and bone loss, plus increase growth hormone and make some chronic diseases less likely. It could even lower back pain. The purpose of this diet is to reduce ailments such as stroke and cancer, heart disease, plus poor health symptoms like hives, weak nails and excess mucus production.

Dangers of an Acidic Diet
When you have an imbalanced diet, you are likely eating more acidic foods, which then forces your body into regulating your pH neutrality. This then lets your body tap into potassium and calcium reserves your body needs for other functions such as keeping strong and healthy bones as you get older.


In the human body, water is the compound which is most abundant and is seventy percent of our biological make-up. Eating foods which have water naturally is good for any diet, and foods that contain acid are deprived of oxygen. If the blood lacks oxygen, the cells are lacking as well, and then your body will store extra amounts of acid which later on can become toxins.
You can develop what is called acidosis when your diet is primarily acidic foods. This will prevent your body from absorbing the vitamins minerals that it needs. Then, you will have a faster build-up of toxins in your body and become more susceptible to disease and illness.
Acidosis Can Be Experienced As:

Infections
Constipation
A pale complexion
Aching muscles
Kidney stones
Fatigue
Inflammation of your corneas and eyelids
Cardiovascular damage

Modifications to Make to Your Diet


Your goal should be for a diet that is seventy percent alkaline and around twenty or thirty percent acidic so you can maintain the right pH in your body. You do not have to remove all of the acidic foods from your diet, as it is a necessary compound, but be careful not to over-indulge in these foods. Acid will form potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium that are all used by your body in repair and fortification. You’ll only need to make some simple changes to keep a well-balanced diet with the correct ratio.


To start out with in an Alkaline Diet, cut back on acidic foods such as soda, red meats, highly processed foods and pastries. You can make the change to brown rice instead of white rice, for example. You can also use whole wheat bread or wheat flour instead of bleached flour, honey or brown sugar instead of granulated white sugar, fruit juices instead of sodas. You should also eat raw nuts as opposed to the honey roasted, salted and roasted nuts. Free range eggs are also a good substation.


Avoiding the Production of Acid


Your body will also over-produce acid because of stress and emotions like pain, anxiety and fear. You should include regular, moderate exercise in your normal routine or deep breathing techniques, yoga and confiding in a good friend to help manage your emotions. Plus, you can take supplements like vitamins D and A, magnesium and calcium. Drinking vegetable juices which are alkaline such as carrot, celery or a beet mixture are helpful as well.


A Note About Fruit
Some people say that eating fruit on this type of diet is ok, while others make the argument that generally fruit is not ok, because even though fruit contains natural sugars, it is still sugar and will still have a bad effect on your body’s acidic levels, as will fruit juice. Of course, if you have to choose between a candy bar and an apple for a snack, go with the apple, but in general, a lot of people seem to think you should be steering clear of fruit. There are some fruits that are ok and that are alkalizing such as avocados, tomatoes, lemons, grapefruits and limes.
As with any diet, it is wise to consult with your doctor first before starting the Alkaline Diet. This diet shouldn’t be used if you have chronic or acute kidney failure unless you are under a doctor’s close supervision. Also, if you have pre-existing heart disease or you are on medication which affects your potassium levels in your body, you need to check with your doctor first.
