The Aspects of American Enslavement
A great deal of enslaved Africans reside in Brazil. With the influx of gold and diamond mining facilities in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, more than two-thirds of all African captives were imported to Brazil. During the 1820s coffee become a key export which caused more African slaves to be imported to Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
With the great deal of agriculture and technology it meant that the importation of African salves to Brazil was difficult. Slaves that were good at agriculture in their native countries and use to the different climates of Brazil needed to be shipped only to certain places.
There were many more male African slaves being shipped to the Americas then were female. Also, many of the male enslaved sold for much more than the women. The male slaves were used for more labor work like mining and farming. The women were mainly used for helping around the house and for sexual pleasure.
There was many procedures that first occurred when new slaves reached the Americas. The African slaves partook in something called 'seasoning.' Which basically meant they were taught to adjust to there new enslaved life and work under deadly conditions. The 'seasoning' process could take up to three years to finish. A great percentage of the African captives did not survive this period. As you can imagine (or not), slavery need to be forced into the enslaved or it would not work. There were many tortures that slaves were to witness and endure in order to cooperate as a slave.
