Baby cribs are such an important part of the nursery. Not only are they the focal point of the room, they also keep your baby safe and secure as they sleep and rest. However, buying a crib that not only looks good but functions as you need it can take a bit of effort. Below you will find three questions that you will need to ask yourself when you are thinking of buying a baby crib. I will first give the three questions, then the answer and a discussion.

To make sure that the baby crib is safe, I should:

(a) Not worry as all baby cribs sold today must meet certain safety standards;

(b) Check the manufacturer’s website for recalls and evidence that the crib meets modern safety standards; or

(c) Look for obvious signs of wear and tear like missing or broken parts.

The correct answer is (b) and (c). While it is true that in most countries modern baby cribs must meet government standards, there are rare occasions when a crib is recalled by the manufacturer or a unethical shop is trying to sell products that don’t meet the standard. As a general rule, you should check for obvious signs of wear and tear (as per c). This is more important if you are buying a second hand or antique crib (you should also check these cribs to see if they meet modern standards too) or a new crib has been shipped to you.

When choosing a type, I should:

(a) buy whatever looks good;

(b) measure the room and space that crib will be placed in; or

(c) just look at cheap baby cribs.

The correct answer is (b). It is an often situation that people’s eyes are bigger than the nursery – they will buy a crib that has no hope of fitting into the room. Round cribs are the smallest variety and are best for small homes as they can fit into tight corners or the middle of the room. Standard, rectangular cribs are generally used for normal sized rooms but should be setup in the nursery itself to avoid having it not fit through the nursery door.

When choosing the color and style, I should:

(a) plan the look and color scheme of the nursery;

(b) buy the color and style that looks good in the shop; or

(c) go the safe option by choosing white.

The correct answer is (a). If you don’t know what the color scheme or the look of the nursery will be you may end up buying a crib that you don’t like or clashes with the overall look you want to achieve. A good idea is look a baby furniture magazines to see what style of nursery you like.
