The Baby Dance

One would think, getting pregnant is one of the easiest things in the world. It seems like such a simple thing, something that our species relies on. Why would it be anything but simple? Though for many couples it can take on average a year to get pregnant! I went through fertility issues. It took almost 2 years of trying and trying to fall pregnant with my son. I can truly say I understand the pain and frustration that couples can feel when trying-to-conceive. I want to use this article to give trying-to-conceive couples some helpful information.

Why does it take most couples one year on average to get pregnant?

Women really have a small window of fertility every month (and sometimes women have anovulatorty cycles, which means they did not ovulate at all). Sperm can live in the female body for more than 7 days, but this is unlikely and under the most favorable conditions. Typically they can live inside the female body for one or two days. An egg though only survives for 12-24 hours after ovulation. Sometimes an egg will not even live that long. The fertile window period is probably about 2-4 days long, maybe even less. On top of that, there are also so many things that can affect fertility: Low sperm count, hormonal imbalance, poor egg quality, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Caffeine, et cetera.

What can you do to improve your chances?

There are though some things that can be helpful to you. Ovulation prediction strips and tests can detect the LH (Luteinizing Hormone) surge. This hormone surges right before ovulation. If you can detect this you know you will most likely ovulate within three days. There is also temping and charting. This is done with a basal body thermometer and a program online called fertility friend. You can also take prenatals, flaxseed oil, vitex, mucinex, a B complex, and magnesium. These are all supplements that have been known to help fertility. Most importantly, RELAX. This is one of the hardest things to do when trying-to-conceive, but it is the most important. I found myself pregnant during a random month when we had stopped trying. We were just relaxed and enjoying our relationship. Sometimes that all by itself leads to successful cycle (and a beautiful little baby).
