The Bad Boys Of Sports in 2011

The year 2011 saw sports mired in a host of controversies and scandals that hogged the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Damaging revelations saw people's unshakeable faith in their heroes, childhood idols, stunned and traumatized . With the year 2011 nearing its end, it's time to recap the most famous controversies and scandals that capsized sports buffs.

PAKISTAN TRIO INCARCERATED FOR SPOT FIXING
The biggest cricketing scandal that brought this beautiful game to its nadir, is when three Pakistani cricketers ,Salman Butt ,Mohammed Amir and Mohammed Asif were nabbed in UK for their alleged involvement in spot fixing in the then ongoing series against England. Salman Butt ,the former captain, Amir and Asif respectively were sentenced 3o months ,1 year and 6 months. The judgment send out a strong message to the sporting world that corruption will be dealt with a strong hand of justice .It was a sad day for cricket as the game which was known for its fairness and integrity was tarnished forever and Pakistan lost a gem of a young bowler in Amir .

KAMBLI'S SUDDEN REVELATIONS
The specter of match fixing scandal again threatened to rear its ugly head ,when Vinod Kambli who was a part of 1996 World Cup Indian Team , sensationally accused former captain Mohammed Azaharuddin of fixing the 1996 WORLD CUP Semifinal against Sri Lanka .Though the exact motivations behind Kambli's revelations after 15 long years remained doubtful , but it still raised uncomfortable questions about the role of few cricketers of yesteryears in match fixing .

DONKEYGATE …..NASER HUSSAIN

Former England Captain Naser Hussain put the proverbial foot in his mouth when he compared Indian fielders to “donkeys” during the ongoing India ‘- England series . His comments triggered a major uproar in the cricketing world…..and Naser subsequently got severely castigated by the English board .

TIME FOR BLATTER TO GET THE AXE
FIFA's president Slepp Blatter was again made to look like a buffoon , when he claimed in two separate interviews about the absence of racism in football.His moronic statements evoked a global furor among football lovers ,and the clamor for his head reached anall time high

THE TEVEZ IMPASSE AT MANCHESTER CITY
Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez was accused by manager Roberto Mancini of refusing to warm up as a substitute in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich in September.
He was fined four weeks' wages which was later halved following an intervention by the Professional Footballers Association (PFA).

EVRA SUAREZ IN FOOTBALL RACE ROW
The ugly side of football again got showcased when Manchester United's Patrice Evra accused Liverpool's Suarez of hurling racial slurs at him . This ignominous episode which mirrors the earlier fracas of Jojn Terry abusing Anton Ferdinand ,again highlighted that despite what many maybe led to believe by Blatter's persuasion ,racism is very much alive and kicking in football .Its high time that the football associations of the concerned countries make a strong example of the perpetrators and snuff racism out once and for all
