The Benefits of Dandelion Root

By | 2 Comments | Rating: 1 | |

Dandelion root has many health and economic benefits. Dandelion root is readily available in Spring. Because of the way the perennial weed, dandelion, grows, the roots are biggest and are storing the most energy and nutrients in Spring before flowering.

Dandelion root is easy to obtain. Simply dig out dandelion plants in Spring, digging deep to get the most root attached to the plant. Dandelion roots can grow to more than two feet long below the surface of the soil. An inauspicious dandelion plant may have a giant tap root below the surface.

Wash the dandelion root, roast it, and use it as a coffee substitute or as an addition to coffee.

Dandelion root contains several nutrients, including potassium. Potassium, along with dandelion's diuretic effect on the body, makes dandelion root particularly helpful for women dealing with PMS symptoms. Dandelion root, added to coffee or used as a coffee substitute, has been shown to lessen abdominal and back pain during PMS and lessen the time and heaviness of the monthly flow.

Dandelion root is also very good for the liver and kidneys because of its diuretic effect. While cleansing the body of toxins, dandelion root also provides essential nutrients to the body as well. Dark circles around the eyes are connected to lower functionality of the liver and kidneys. Because of dandelion root's positive impact on the functions of the liver and kidneys, ingesting dandelion root on a regular basis can cause dark circles around the eyes to fade, even dissapear.

Because of dandelion root's diuretic effect on the body, it has been prescribed for weight loss for some time in Europe. In one study, laboratory animals were shown to have lost 30% of their body mass after being given dandelion root tinctures for one month.

Dandelion root has a stimulating effect similar to caffiene and has a distinct but not overpowering taste.

I love dandelion root for getting rid of bloat! Usually, I drink it as a tea. But I am intrigued by the idea of using it as "coffee." I am going to look into this more! Thanks for the inspiration!
