The Benefits of Garage Floor Paint
It's terrible, but most homeowners don't have a second thought when it comes to their garage floors like they do about their kitchen or bathroom floors. They just assume that the concrete ground doesn't need upkeep, doesn't need to be cleaned, and will take any kind of abuse you throw its way. But, as we all know, that's not the case. Stains, spills, dirt, and grease build-up can be cleaned up quickly and not stain as easily after you apply garage floor paint.
Let's get started. There are two fundamental types of garage floor coatings. You have your epoxy garage floor paint, and your basic garage floor paint.
Epoxy Garage Floor Paint - This specific type of paint creates a slick and think coating over the concrete floor. It's beautiful once it's done, but it's a difficult multi-step process which needs to be done carefully. You also need to specific tools to get the job done effectively and efficiently. You definitely don't want to see any streaks or miss any corners. It'll look terrible when it's done. Before you get started, your floor needs to be in tip-top shape shape. Just a word of caution, the floor does get slippery when it's wet.
Basic Garage Floor Paints - This is a less expensive approach, but it does get the job done. Plus, it's easier to apply when compared to epoxy floor paint. All you need is a roller, paint, and patience to apply it correctly. Plus, your garage floor doesn't need to be in pristine shape to get started. All you have to do is paint your color and get started. One of the main setbacks to selecting garage floor paint is that it needs to be repainted every year since it gets run down as you use it throughout the year.
Application
Selecting which paint to apply largely depends on what you use it for on a daily basis. If you use your garage to park your garage on a daily basis, then you'll want to use epoxy floor paint. But, if you use your garage sparingly, then you can save money and time by applying garage floor paint. For longer lasting protection, purchase a latex based or oil based paint.
Before you apply the paint to the floor, make sure you fill the holes and cracks in the floor. You can use epoxy based patching to fill the holes before you get started. This will ensure that your paint will not crack or peel up in any places prematurely. But you definitely have to make sure that your garage floor is spotless before you start painting. Dirt prevents the paint from adhering to the concrete correctly.
Maintenance and Upkeep
You've just invested your hard money buying your paint, and your labor applying it. And your floor looks beautiful. So why not take basic measures to ensure that it stays like this for years to come. Some of the tips I'm going to share with you will keep your garage floor looking great:
- Don't drag anything over the floor. Make sure you pick it up completely, and move it to where you want it.
- Make sure to touch up any areas that you notice are peeling. This will cut down on the number of times you have completely repaint the floor. A simple retouch will save you time and money in the long run.
