Does your little one suffer from eczema? Have you tried one baby wash after another without any success? When it comes to your baby's skin, it should be smooth and soft…like a baby's bottom, right? I have researched many of the baby shampoos and washes that parents have used to treat their child's eczema and come up with the top 6 baby soaps that seem to work best for treating the sensitive skin that accompanies eczema because as a mom, I know how important it is that our babies are comfortable and healthy!
Before I tell you the best baby shampoos and washes for eczema, I want to give you a few bathing pointers that, when used in conjunction with the right soap or wash, can help to bring your baby some relief from their skin irritation. The first thing you need to address is the water temperature. Never let a baby with skin problems bathe in hot water. Only use lukewarm water as hot water will further dehydrate your baby's skin. The next tip I have is to not put the soap or shampoo in the bathwater. Allow your child to soak in the tub without soap for a few minutes, limiting their exposure to the soap. It has also been shown that your baby's skin will soak up some moisture from the water alone which will help to improve the condition of the skin's surface. Only use the soap at the end of bath time, right before taking your baby out of the water because, even though these are good baby shampoos and washes for eczema, they will still be somewhat drying to your child's skin because of the inherent nature of skin-cleansing products. Once your child is done with his or her bath, make sure to gently pat dry their skin rather than rubbing, which is not only damaging to the skin's surface, but will remove more of the precious moisture that we're trying to keep in the skin. It's also a good idea to follow up bath time with a good eczema cream or lotion. It is unnecessary to bathe your child every day and limiting bath time to about twice a week will help to maintain the natural oils in your little one's skin.
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is a great wash for eczema. It may seem like an odd choice as it is marketed and sold as a facial cleanser for adults, but it is extremely gentle and has worked for many kids as a successful eczema wash. I could find very few negative comments in regards to Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser as an effective baby wash for eczema. Many of the parents used this as an all-over wash for their child's hair and body and in a lot of cases, it completely healed the eczema! It is also a great wash for super-sensitive skin from many other conditions. Some of the reviewers didn't like the idea that this cleanser contains chemicals, but such a vast majority of the reviewers, whether using it for children or adults, found this to be an extremely effective treatment for eczema and gentle too.
Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Fragrance-Free Creamy Wash is another popular choice as a shampoo and wash for eczema. I actually purchased this wash for my own baby and it is fabulous! While her eczema was extremely mild, I found this cleanser to be very creamy and soothing as it contains colloidal oatmeal. There were people who were upset that this soap "claimed to be fragrance-free but was definitely scented." Well, fragrance-free just means that there is no chemical fragrance added to this product. There is a natural and quite pleasant scent to this cleanser that comes directly from the ingredients in the product. The reviews on this wash were overwhelmingly positive and I would feel comfortable using this product on any baby with a sensitive skin condition!
Mustela Dermo-Pediatrics Stelatopia Cream Cleanser is a very highly-reputed baby shampoo and wash for eczema. It contains super-fatted and anti-drying agents. It uses Glycine to soothe irritation, itching, pulling and stretching sensations that can accompany eczema. This product is extremely popular in Europe, but is quite quickly gaining popularity in the States for it's high quality and gentle effectiveness. There were tons of reviewers that raved about this product and the wonders it worked on their child's eczema or other skin problems. I think Mustela Dermo-Pediatrics Stelatopia Cream Cleanser is definitely worth a try and has a really good chance of doing your little one some good.
Mustela Bebe Dermo-Cleansing Gel For Hair And Body is another product from the Mustela line of products that is a popular baby shampoo and wash for eczema. While it didn't garner quite the amount of praise that the above cleanser did, there was certainly no shortage of positive reviews for this product. It is a mild gel cleanser that uses vitamin B5 to soothe irritated skin. It has a light, pleasant scent and works great on many skin conditions. The Mustela Bebe Dermo-Cleansing Gel For Hair And Body is a definite contender for one of the top spots in this list!
Kiss My Face Pure Olive Oil Soap is a great soap for treating eczema. It is an all-natural soap with no chemical additives and the only bar soap to make this list! The VERY few complaints that I could find for this soap had more to do with the fact that this soap "melts" quite quickly if it is not given adequate time to dry out in a spot with drainage. This is easily solved by using a soap dish with a raised soap bed and by not using it every day. If you do plan on using it every day, a few reviewers said that they had two bars open at one time and would alternate them. Another way to help with this problem that many people employed was to cut the bar into several pieces, which also made it easier to handle. This soap has a light, natural, olive oil scent that many people really love but there were definitely others found it unpleasant. One thing is for sure, it is certainly not a "baby-like" scent. However, it worked miracles for many, many parents and their kids to treat some very severe eczema. One review that stuck out to me was a mom that had tried everything on her 7 year old daughter with severe eczema and the Kiss My Face Pure Olive Oil Soap is the only thing that worked and it completely cleared up her eczema!
California Baby Super-Sensitive Shampoo and Body Wash is one of the more commonly used baby washes for eczema. There were a considerable amount of reviewers that had success when using this to treat their little one's eczema. The only negative comment that I saw several times was the fact that this soap has a watery consistency and tended to leak out of the user's hands before they could get it to the baby. This would probably work better on an older child that doesn't need to be supported during bath time.
You may have to try several different baby shampoos and washes for eczema before finding the one that will work best for your little one. Every child's skin is different and will react in different ways to different soaps and cleansers. Hopefully one of the above products will work to treat your baby's skin problems, because as a mom, I know that there's enough to worry about with a baby without wondering if their bath soap will hurt them. So give one of them a try and happy bathing!
