Most everybody has a deadbolt on their front door. In fact many people in some neighborhoods may even have more than one. Deadbolt door locks are cheap and simple to install but for many families in good neighborhoods with lots of people needing a key to get in it may make more sense to splurge and get a good keypad deadbolt instead of the standard “key only” variety.

Push Button Deadbolt LockFor starters the benefits of keypad deadbolts are plentiful. They offer simple ways to get into the home without having to carry a key. They offer elegant solutions for giving access to your home to specific individuals on a limited basis. They are reprogrammable offering you an alternative to buying and installing a completely new lock and key set. They also last a long time and are arguably more secure than a normal deadbolt due to their electronic features.

Keyless Entry Systems To Shy Away From

Before we look at the features of the best keypad door locks lets first debunk the concept of the cheap keypad lock set.

I write an entire article stating my case that the cheapest keypad deadbolt locks are not worth buying but in short my reasons for staying away from these are simple. They are often made with inferior materials and manufacturing standards and as a result they are not as durable and secure as higher priced options.

Satin Nickel Keyless DeadboltThis is not to say that I have experience with electronic deadbolt lock sets failing but if you read reviews from customers posted on Amazon’s website you’ll see countless people complaining about the cheap keyless deadbolts which stop working properly after only being installed for weeks or months.

I take reviews like this seriously and wouldn’t put up with that. I’d much rather pay for a great keypad door lock set for my front door that I can rely upon to work when I need it to. I have no interest in getting locked out of my house just because I bought a cheap door lock.

My Favorite Keypad Deadbolt Door Lock (That Is Also Reasonably Priced)

The best keypad deadbolt door locks are made from high quality materials. They are heavier and don’t feel like plastic toys. They have been manufactured with quality construction and materials and their electronic parts are well made.

Almost any good deadbolt will cost at least $100 or more. That’s all there is to it. You can actually find some magnificent keyless deadbolt lock systems which range all the way up to $500 or more but the average person that is simply seeking the convenience features of keyless entry shouldn’t have to pay more the $150 for safe keypad door locks.

Schlage Camelot Keypad Deadbolt LocksThe Schlage BE365VCAM716 Camelot Keypad Deadbolt is one deadbolt that fits my vision for what a good every-man’s keypad lock set should be. It is well made; it has excellent reviews. It is affordable but not cheap; it has programmable codes that can be changed at any time. You can program multiple codes if you want deactivating them any time at will. It’s not overly fancy. It has security features built in that disable the entire lock if someone fails to enter the correct code over and over consecutively. It is everything a typical family could want.

Of course if you really are looking for the best on the market this is not it. It is just as susceptible to lock picking as any other keyed lockset and it doesn’t have wireless capabilities. Some other high end keyless entry deadbolts have remote entry access and other fancy features. If you are looking for something like this then be prepared to spend upwards of $500 otherwise give a look at the Schlage Camelot and save a few bucks.
